golden cut -pineapple color, transluscent; head as thick as a crepe, with thin lacing like high cirrus clouds. nice nose suggests balanced elements: sawdust, cookie and orange, some raw leather. brisk palette with medium body, some orange in the flavor, tang and tea mix. modest sweetness and cleansing bitter finish.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 20, 2003 Fruity, sweet, and fragrantly hoppy aroma. Fairly decent head and carbonation. A light dusting of yeast in the bottle was swirled and poured. Red Tail is a rather nice light golden-orangey amber color. Flavor mostly seems to be about the balance of this beer. The flavor profile is one of the more complex I've tried, for the style. There are some nice fruity (pineapple) flavors, some slightly caramel flavors (not as pronounced as in many ambers, though) and overall a nice, light but spicy and fresh hop bitterness. The finish is mostly dry and hoppy, but a tad of malt sticks around. I had an impression when I was drinking it that it was 'Barleywine Light.' It really does have a lot of the same characteristics, just not to nearly the degree of a typically huge barleywine. I'm sure not everyone got that impression, but I did! As far as ambers go, this one is very hard to beat for me. Tasty, and very underrated IMHO.

Nice thick head, copper color beer. I agree about the dry finish. This used to be a favorite but I dont get to it much anymore.

I can’t say I found this impressive; it’s too hoppy for an amber ale, for one thing.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
very spicy hopping, medium bodied, dry finish. malt is in the background. more hoppy than most ambers - almost like they spilled just a little IPA in the batch... a rich beer that’s still quite refreshing. summertime favorite - quite good.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2003 Rating #1 - Bottle (5 3 5 2 13). A lighter color than I expected. A very dry finish, a nice head when poured. Citric taste that does not finish well. Rating #2 - Tap at brewpub in Hopland, CA (6 3 6 2 12). Amber color with an off-white head. Malty but also well balanced. A little touch of fruit. Rating #3 - Bottle of the commemorative 22oz Reggae on the River. Amber color with a lush foamy off-white head. A light malt and earthy aroma and flavor. Must and wet, this beer lacks character and support.
