A tantalizing twist on a unique style! This ale has a seductive ebony hue, with an aroma that is bold, full of fresh floral and citrus hops, with just a pinch of pine. The rich aroma blends delightfully into the enigmatic body of rich roasted malts with chocolatey, nutty flavors. Then ensues the tang of refreshing orange peel and a citrus hop finish that lightly lingers and then beckons you to revisit this most enjoyable seasonal ale.

Black hue, zero visibility with mostly diminishing light khaki head. No lacing. Citrus orange peel, dark malt, dark fruit, licorice aromas. Taste of prunes and dark fruit up front with a light citrus (orange) finish.

Black body, stable head, looks nice. Fruity, malty, bitterness but not very fresh, rather sweaty. Far from a Belgian ale, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not super clean. Chocolate palate, medium bitter. Simple ending. It’s nice. (33cl bottle brought from California by Flavia, many thanks!)

12 oz bottle brewed in Saratoga Springs, NY. (World Market) Chattanooga, TN.
Dark reddish brown colour with a small light tan head. Dark malt, oatmeal, mild smokey notes, bacon (?) and mild hops in the aroma. The flavour is toasted malt, mild hops, mild bitterness, chocolate and some sweetness. A bit thin but otherwise quite nice Black IPA.

A black beer with a small beige head. The aroma is roasted and smoky malt with citrus. The flavor is burnt and pith, like a burned chocolate orange candy.

Pours black with lacing head into Sprecher pint glass. It seems strange to get such a citrusy nose with a ale that looks like a porter. The flavor gives way to a robust smokey/charred flavor with a tinge of orange. It is quite pleasant and I was expecting this at all.

"Seems that a. this wasn’t fresh (or just poor quality) and b. there wasn’t enough good things going on. Floaties galore, followed by a nice hearty black roasted aroma with faint orange. Flavor and feel don;t match...too thin and the flavor is weak, and a little off/tart. I’ve had too many far superior in the style to try this again."

Beer of month club. Pours dark brown with some foam that quickly recedes. Nose is subtle but has pine/citrus of IPA with a touch of roasted malts. Taste has some roasted malt up front, then citrus and I do taste the orange peel which blends reasonably well with the hops on the finish. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

*had the beer after a Bell's Hopslam Pours a great black with toffee head. Roasted malts and caramels show up on the palate alongside hoppy bitterness, but the hops show up to early in the profile and ruin the roasted enjoyments. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft in a standard pint glass. Huge off white head that left sheets of lacing on a black liquid. Aroma is pine and mild citrus hops with chocolate malt. The flavor is much the same with a good chocolate malt to pine hop balance. The bitterness is a little length with pine being more dominant than the citrus. The body is pretty thin. If the body was beefed up it would rate higher. I guess it is lighter for the summer months. Still would like more body.

12oz pour into tulip glass at cellar temperature. Pretty good lingering head. Dark brown colour. Piny, chocolate, floral aroma. Hint of caramel and citrus. Slightly sweet taste. Smooth and creamy. I really enjoyed this one and would buy it again.
