A tantalizing twist on a unique style! This ale has a seductive ebony hue, with an aroma that is bold, full of fresh floral and citrus hops, with just a pinch of pine. The rich aroma blends delightfully into the enigmatic body of rich roasted malts with chocolatey, nutty flavors. Then ensues the tang of refreshing orange peel and a citrus hop finish that lightly lingers and then beckons you to revisit this most enjoyable seasonal ale.

12oz pour into tulip glass at cellar temperature. Pretty good lingering head. Dark brown colour. Piny, chocolate, floral aroma. Hint of caramel and citrus. Slightly sweet taste. Smooth and creamy. I really enjoyed this one and would buy it again.

Thin black body with a thin tan head. Aroma was a mix of lightly roasted malts and some grapefruit. No real sense of orange peel. Flavor had some roasted malt flavors, but like the aroma it was very mild. Slightly bitter in the after taste. Easy to drink. Meh ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not bad. drinking it a bit warm since i bought it at TJs. Nice and hoppy and I don’t really get the orange peel but i guess those things are bitter and so are hops... maybe a way for them to save some cash on bittering their beer? I don’t mind it. I’m drinking it.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, clear, with thin tan lacing. Aroma of licorice, spice, and citrus fruits. Taste is roasty, nutty, and chocolatey, citrusy and floral, with a moderately bitter licorice finish. Medium smooth body. Solid example of a black IPA.

Black with a thin tan head. Rich aroma with molasses and pine. Flavor is nicely bitter. Overall, this is a smooth and drinkable beer, but lacking any nuance. I feel like Mendocino made this just to jump on the black IPA bandwagon.

Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: 12-oz. mug From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif. Price: $7.49 for a 6-pack Purchased: May 28, 2014 Consumed: May 29, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured an almost pitch-black color with two fingers of frothy tan head. Drooping, layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Average retention. Smelled dark chocolate brownie, black coffee, dark espresso, vanilla, toffee, caramel, light smoky fire, fudge, crayon and nutty malts. Kind of digging it, but reminding me more of a dark porter or light stout than a dark IPA. Tasted pretty average compared to the smell. Got bitter black coffee, espresso, dark vanilla, dark fudge, smoky fire, crayon and bitter, roasty nuts. Missing something. Just OK. Full-to-medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. This beer got worse as it went down. I’d say I won’t have it again, but I still have five left in this six-pack. Any takers?

12oz bottle, from Party Town. Pitch black color. Thin brown head. Bits and ropes of lace. Very basic aroma. Dark fruit, metallic. Not much hop aroma. Light bit of pine. Kind of metallic in the nose. Bitter taste. Spicy pepperiness. Not sure if not fresh or just not good. Medium body. Kind of lighter carbonation, with a strange texture. Very dry finish. Some bitter dark chocolate. Some dark fruit raisiny quality to it. Big bite in the finish, astringent bitterness. Not a good black IPA.
