j_b (735), Rochester, New York, USA Apr 25, 2008 Very dark orange, with a soapy looking had. It receded quickly and I was left with some white on the edges. Candy caramel aroma , maple and malt. Palate is sweet up front briefly, then dries up quickly with hoppishness. This is good.
thegreenrooster (1487), St.louis, Missouri, USA Aug 26, 2008 Pour is a hazy copper with a large white head. Aroma is caramel, bready and a nice helping of malts. Flavor is more malty than anything but some caramel and toffee come out. Finish is thick with some noticable alcohol. Still this is fairly decent with low bitterness and a nice malty backbone. phishpond417 (1409), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Aug 20, 2008 This beer pours a translucent copper colour with a small, thin off white head. Plenty of carbonation, colour is attractive and vibrant. Retention is mediocre, mouthfeel is lighter. Aroma is pleasent, soft honey, carmel and full of bright hop character. Taste is slightly biscuity, with flavors of caramel, grapes and pecans. jimhilt (1402), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Aug 19, 2008 Pours a three finger cream head that fades slowly, leaving a good lace. Almost clear amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Slight hoppy nose. Flavor is burnt caramel with a somewhat bitter finish. $1.85 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma. cheapdark (1555), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2008 Slightly musty olfactory on the lid pop but in the glass its aroma is more strong and volatile. Looks orange brown and has a head that is thin and foamy and lasts. intense strong malty alky presence on the palate. Some carbonation and there could be more. taste bud impact is quite bitter, more than I like for a bock but how can you hide 7%? Not disappointing on the alky taste attributes, you really know this is a high alky content, not well hidden, its in yer face. Finish is lingering bitter candy. Probably would not buy again, a little too much for this lager lover. Dizzying effect near the end of the session. Appearance: Pours out a dark copper body with a small, scattered, white head.
Smell: Lightly toasty, sweet-smelling maltiness and spicy Noble hops with minor hint of Red Delicious apple peelings and a waft of alcohol.
Taste: Toasted malts with a tiny kick of graininess along with a fair amount of caramel sweetness. There’s a discreet Noble spicy hop character and bitterness. Slight touch of alcohol near the end. Still manages to finish fairly malty and sweet, though.
Mouthfeel: Just a hair above medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A reasonably respectable bock from dear old Mendocino.
