3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
"consistancy prevents me from putting this one at the top...at one point a few years ago it was my favorite ipa (pre stone), but over the years Mendocinos quality has tailed off...not as big and hoppy as it used to be, but still good."
Used to be great!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The body has a golden amber color with a one inch collar of bright white foam. The head quickly settle to a wispy thin layer that makes some spotty lacing. Its nose has the classic American citrus hops with notes of lemon, grapefruit and a touch of pine. I also get light toffee like malt underneath the hops. Just as I was expecting from the aroma I get citrusy grapefruit rind and some pine like hop notes right up front. It’s not over the top with hops but the balance in favor of the hops over the light base of candy like malt sweetness. Hop flavor runs right into the finish and gives it a gentle bitter fade. An easy drinking medium body rounds out the palate.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a clear amber with nice white head leaving good lacing. Aroma is malty, possibly some expired hops? Taste is thin, some stale malts, salty, odd bitterness at the end. Not good for me.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz bottle at home from backlog notes. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor have some citrus and resiny hops, caramel, toasted malts, with a mild bitterness to the finish. Nothing bad, but everything is muted.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This White Hawk clearly lives in a Pine tree and snacks on grapefruits and oranges rather frequently. I am not sure what the "select" means before IPA, other than that it has been selected to be sold as an IPA. Big pine-doggin’ here with loads of citrus too. Some peaty earth flaves kickin’ it as well. Needs more malt on the ol’ tightrope to keep it from a-goin’ down down down.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours an awful muddy/cloudy color with almost no head. Nose is malty. Aromas are piney hops, grapefruit and caramel with a salty aftertaste. A bit weird, not really pleasant IPA.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
From BA review on 1-29-12 -
Poured from bottle into pint glass
(This is actually the second time I had this. I wanted to give it another try before reviewing, as the first time I really was not a big fan.)
Appearance - Pours a golden color with a nice what head that forms upon pouring. It fades leaving a think layer of persistent white foam on top with a bit of lacing.
Smell - Piney and malty in aroma really meet the nose up front and are quite nice, but soon the aroma turns to something a little more earthy. The earthiness however is a sorta metallic and clay mix which does not meld well with the more burnt malt aroma.
Taste - The taste is roasted malt at first followed my some more earthy hop flavor with a bit of pine thrown in. The hop flavor is relativity light in comparison to most IPA’s of comparable strength. The maltiness is too much and the hoppiness is too low.
Mouthfeel - The carbonation is a bit too high and the body is bit too thin.
Overall - Not to impressed with this IPA and one I will likely not try again. If you like your IPA a bit on the lighter hop side with the profile more toward malty/earthy then this may be for you; its just not for me.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle in our appartment, Maui, from the Wine Corner in Paia, 25/04/14.
Clear golden amber with a good sized off white head that retains well.
Nose is citric sherbets, light floral hop tones, straw, faint caramel, bitter orange, damp towel.
Taste comprises light citric peel, bitter orange, straw, orange squash, bitter resonance.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close.
A rather muted low end IPA, looked the part but offered little at the business end.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
355 ml bottle bought at Liquid Assets in Central.
Translucent amber colour with trunks of yeast particles; Half finger head and off-white foam which fades in 40 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing with slight carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of Ale malt, with light grapefruit, strong caramel, strong molasses, toffee, raisins, dark fruits, faint alcohol, bread, yeast and faint grass; Medium sweet taste of Ale malt, with metallic, strong molasses, light grapefruit zest, light dark fruits, strong yeast, strong lime, sharp bitter hops and strawy grass; Mid to light body, slick palate; Mouth feel is sweet Ale with moderate maltyness and body. Zesty grapefruit and solid light plums / dark fruits. The rich caramel aroma was not carry onto the taste.Metallic was faded eventually. Booze is slightly biting. Loads of yeast but not too bready. Hmm…Hoppiness is zasty grapefruit and raisin / light dark fruit nose and taste. Bitterness is sharp strawy grass for a lasting and nice bitter finish; Dry aftertaste, Bitter and sharp grassy to mouth.
Comments: I think this one is a bit shaky and not as solid as other fancy craft brew IPAs. From aroma to taste, it’s strong but kind of fragile, trying hard to be a top dog with limited resources. I salute the effort, but that’s not good enough. Worth a try, though.
