1.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 Shadallion (534) - Sacramento, California, USA - NOV 30, 2002
Another trainwreck from one of most consistently bad breweries in California. I have yet to taste a beer from these schmucks that merits me ever buying more than one single bottle. This IPA is sour, spritzy and thoroughly unpleasant. No hops, either. If that doesn’t signal a death knell for an IPA, I don’t know what does.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2003 the metallic orange color seeped into the head and a pink foamy top resulted..the aroma screamed in a hoppy shrill..Starts out weakly representing the style with cumbersome malts.. but subsided they did and from the woodwork came the hops..brilliant bitterness of fresh hops elevated the whole experience to a tad above the average indian.. Not bad..
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 mwsf (360) - San Francisco, California, USA - NOV 4, 2002
Copper color. Slightly hazy. Medium head. Aroma of yeast (bananas), alcohol, slight malt, and hops. Bitter. Malty flavor. Yeasty! Medium body. This beer really reminds me of a Belgian from the yeast. I’ve heard they’ve suffered some infections lately and this might be from a funky batch, but I like it. Good combination of Belgian-style yeastiness with banana esters plus malt and hop bitterness. Damn fine!

Golden Color, even head. Not an overwhelming flavor. Bitter aftertaste.

Orange gold color, Medium foamy head. Big hop aroma. A medium bodied IPA. Hops, hops and more hops. Hoppy and then hoppy some more. Not a lot of malts. Hops dominate. A little grapefruity and hoppy. If you get the idea that this beer is hoppy, thank you. That all said it still tastes pretty good. Hoppy, but kind of smooth. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 SpaceMonkey (182) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 14, 2002
This has a big grapefruit nose with lots of fresh flowers floating around. It pours deep gold with a solid white froth the forms a sustaining thick carpet. The beginning is big pine needles and an even bigger bitter citrus end. This is a nice IPA, but a bit unbalanced, I could use some malt participation, the piney hop bitter tends to dominate.

uh oh - bitter beer face! the hawk on the front looks like he swallowed something that was a bit much for him - perhaps a bit of this ale. it’s certainly hoppy - but I can’t taste too much else. little malt and alchohol in there someplace. body is medium. not bad - but I’ll take their eye of the hawk or redtail ale over this any day.
4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Diego (79) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 3, 2002
EXCELLENT BEER. NICE MUSTY ALE NOSE TO IT AND A GORGEOUS TAN BOUQUET MAKES THIS A RATHER ATTRACTIVE BEER TO STARE AT. FLAVOR IS THE REAL PRIZE. WHITE HAWK IS PROBABLY (AND I HAVEN’T CHECKED MY RATING LIST YET BUT) THE BEST IPA I’VE TASTED THUS FAR. REALLY NICE AND HOPPY, BITTER IF YOU WILL. A PERFECT SUMMER BEER AND DEFINITLY WORTH THE PRICE. OVERALL YOU CAN’T LOSE IF YOU’RE A HOPHEAD.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Marc (485) - Yokosuka, JAPAN - SEP 2, 2002
Decent IPA, Golden in color with a white self sustaining head with citrus and alcohol in the nose. Plentiful hops and a slightly oily mouthfeel but a bit sharp. Mellows as you make your way through the glass and a bit more malt becomes apparrent as it warms. Leaves a bitter hop taste in your mouth for a while after the last sip is taken. It can use a bit of refining but good none the less.

This beer just came out in bottles,8/02.Fairly well hopped. I think an IPA should have more hopps. Has a slight alcohol flavor but is overall a good IPA.I love hopps and this beer could use plenty more in my opinion. I will buy it again.
