White Hawk is a traditional IPA .The IPA recipe is based on the original 1880 brew that was sent to India for the British troops. The advent of India Pale Ale was born of a need to supply beer in the 1800’s to British troops in India. This hearty, heavily hopped ale was brewed to endure the rigors of the long voyage from Great Britain.

White Hawk Original IPA was launched in California in early 2002 to meet the demand for a unique India Pale Ale. Consumer response for White Hawk IPA exceeded expectations and it is fast gaining a loyal following both in 6 pack and on draft.

Nose of caramel, lovely clear golden-orange color. Aromas of spruce and citrus. Not overly agressive, but hops-forward. With medium sweetness, medium body, and distinctive hps, this is a nice IPA.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2007 RERATING: 2 ounce sample at 99 Bottles beer tasting. I have had this before and was unimpressed due to unbalanced and competing flavors. This was better than my previous bout with it, but still strong and somewhat unbalanced. It poured the color of melted butter and had a thick, lasting head. The flavor was less metallic than last time, but the grapefruit and alcohol flavors that come through are still too strong and "off." A much better experience with White Hawk, however. ORIGINAL RATING (7/10, 3/5, 2/10, 1/5, 5/20, 1.8): 12 ounce bottle. Ugh! This IPA poured the color of melted butter, with a full, frothy, white head that stuck around for quite awhile. It smelled of grass and flowers and citrus—much more orange than grapefruit. Then I tasted it and everything changed. The flavor was overly alcoholic, almost unpleasantly so. The finish was strongly of alcohol and it just continued. The flavor, once I recovered from the initial shock, was really three separate flavors that were competing with one another, none of them preferable over the others. The first was the harsh alcohol flavor. The second was bitter and metallic, similar to what licking a penny tastes like. The third was overly acidic grapefruit, with little orange component, which was a complete contrast to its nose. There was no good flavor on which to redeem this even a little bit. Not recommended.

From bottle... poured copper orange with mildly hoppy aroma. Flavor was a good citrusy & pine, but was not very strong. Kind of a mild overall IPA, but good enough to get again.

A pretty good IPA. It’s heavily hopped, but not too much so its unenjoyable. Not my favorite of the Mendocinos, but I enjoy this beer on draft down at the brewery when Im in the mood.

Dark golden color, not much aroma, what is there is pine-y. First impression is pine-y hops, then malt peeks thru. The malt eventually becomes a little too sweet. Medium bodied.

Nothing too special with this ipa. Yes, a citrus note on the nose with some piney characters. The lacing was average at best for a good ipa. Then the taste...it did nothing to bring out the hops in this, more malt than anything. I felt like there was a bitter feel that fizzeled out and left me wanting something more.

Light golden orange color with a medium thick eggshell white head that lasted pretty well. Thin lacing. The aroma is musty and mildly hopped, with a faint hint of citrus. One-dimensional flavor. Straight hops without a whole lot of taste, and a bit of grapefruit is about it. Boring.

Pours orangish/amber color with thin head. Semi floral taste with pretty decent amount of hoppiness. Nice bitterness kick to it although maybe a little overdone. Overall its a pretty good Ipa but could be a little better balanced.

I was presently surprised by this IPA I must admit. I had read some of the reviews before I had tried this one and I don't really understand why it rates so low? Mild grass hop and pine aroma that isn't as strong as I would like but pleasant nonetheless. Pours out copper orange red with a medium head and noticeable lacing. Flavor was strong bitter at first than trailing off to a dry finish. Fairly well balanced and very easy to drink. A very good session beer. I think it deserves a higher rating that it gets by most, but that?s just my opinion. Try it, I don?t think it will disappoint.

While I did not love redtail ale, at least that beer had some good hops in it. Seriously weak bitterness for and IPA. Or perhaps i should say bad bitterness because what was there was just not very enjoyable. I like IPA’s so I could not hate this beer but did not really enjoy it
