White Hawk is a traditional IPA .The IPA recipe is based on the original 1880 brew that was sent to India for the British troops. The advent of India Pale Ale was born of a need to supply beer in the 1800’s to British troops in India. This hearty, heavily hopped ale was brewed to endure the rigors of the long voyage from Great Britain.

White Hawk Original IPA was launched in California in early 2002 to meet the demand for a unique India Pale Ale. Consumer response for White Hawk IPA exceeded expectations and it is fast gaining a loyal following both in 6 pack and on draft.

One good thing about Mendocino is their bombers are significantly cheaper than other brands. One not-so-good thing I can say is you can tell why. This brew pours a light golden orange color with a medium thick eggshell white head that lasted pretty well. Thin lacing. The aroma is musty and mildly hopped, with a faint hint of citrus. Possibly the thinnest body on an IPA in recent memory, with a very one-dimensional flavor. Straight hops without a whole lot of taste, and a bit of grapefruit is about it. The finish is somewhat bitter but again not too flavorful. I was frankly bored with this about halfway through which is pretty rare for me when it comes to IPAs. Worth trying, but I won’t revisit this.

A foul west coast IPA. Thin in body no sign of any type of west coast hops. Just awful.

Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, grape and orange. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long caramel and fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at Brother Tuckers. A nice amber pour with a pretty big white head with lots of lacing. Typcial IPA aromas of citrus, pine and malt. Flavor was smooth but pretty light on the hops. A good beer, but not great by any stretch.

Hazy golden color with a small off-white head. Sweet dark fruity hops, mild sugary sweetness, prunes, some unfreshness and maltiness in the aroma. The flavor is harsh herbal hops, moderate bitterness, unfreshness and dryish maltiness.

Clear, deep golden brew with a white, large, rocky head. Mostly lasting with spunky lacework. The nose contains honey, evergreen, black pepper, whole grain rice and hearty white bread. Warmly bitter from start to finish. Numbing and pleasant experience. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Long, bitter finish!

Bottle. Pours a clear copper orange with a small white head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is a piney hops with grapefruit and caramel. Thin mouthfeel and a bit watery on the palate. A sweet hop taste with grapefruit and citrus with a nice dry finish. A good IPA from Mendocino.

Bottle @ home. Gusher though it doesn’t smell of an infection. Hazy, yellow orange appearance with a huge cream colored head. Sweet floral hoppy, honey, potpourri aroma. Somewhat bready, lightly toasty, a touch fruity, a little tangy, floral flavor. I really didn’t like this one.

"consistancy prevents me from putting this one at the top...at one point a few years ago it was my favorite ipa (pre stone), but over the years Mendocinos quality has tailed off...not as big and hoppy as it used to be, but still good." Used to be great!
