COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
White Hawk is a traditional IPA .The IPA recipe is based on the original 1880 brew that was sent to India for the British troops. The advent of India Pale Ale was born of a need to supply beer in the 1800ís to British troops in India. This hearty, heavily hopped ale was brewed to endure the rigors of the long voyage from Great Britain.

White Hawk Original IPA was launched in California in early 2002 to meet the demand for a unique India Pale Ale. Consumer response for White Hawk IPA exceeded expectations and it is fast gaining a loyal following both in 6 pack and on draft.

This beer has an orange/amber color akin to other IPAs with the signature creamy head. Hoppy like it should be, but lacking the fruit hints that most IPAs are known for. It was a smooth taste, but that was one of the few outstanding qualities.

Donít like. I am an IPA guy, this is not a very good one. Way too light on hops, and that is like rule #1 of things NOT TO DO when brewing an IPA.

Firstly, with their Imperial IPA being so good, Iím not sure why their normal IPA would be so distant from that, but it is. This golden, fizzy headed ale has a very quick nose with just a light touch of fruit and hops. The body is just as quick with no depth, dry and bitter. Too bad.

Not bad. Pours cloudy amber, sea foam head. Good lacing. Light mouthfeel, smooth hop bitterness because of the malty imbalance. No way to tell how fresh the bottle is so maybe it was towards end of shelf life. Otherwise I would compare it to the Sam Smith IPA.

Cold 12oz bottle: Pours a clear copper color with a small amount of ivory bubbles around the edges and some lacing. Aroma is of pine, hops, rich malt and orange. Taste is bitter from beginning to end. Crisp with an oily texture. Well carbonated.

Spicy, citrus hops in aroma. Pours hazy gold with white head. Very hoppy, followed by bitter citrus hops. It doesnít stay with you long though which is nice. Then after a few sips, the sourness of the hops catches up with you. It can be a bit much for the aftertaste.

12oz trader joes. This is a decent IPA and there is nothing special or unique about it. The taste is pretty much right in line with all the other IPAís of the world, with more hops than the average beer. If you are rating this beer against all other IPAís it would be right in the middle of the pack. Not great, not aweful, just decent.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden-amber body with a foamy white head. Features a beltching hawk on label! Smell: Not the most florid aroma out there, thatís for sure. Some flowers and some citrus, mostly. Oh, and whatís this? Vanilla? Get oughta town! Taste: Initially sweet, with hints of toffee, orange, and...hm, well, thereís that vanilla again. Pureed peaches and pine needles just before the dry, bitter finish. Astringent in the back of throat upon swallowing. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Moderate carbonation. A bit watery. Drinkability: A beer riddled with shortcomings. Oh, and about that odd vanilla-nicity, does anyone have any comment or opinion on this? I feel the search for the source of it will become an all-consuming obsession, and every moment until I find its source will be lost to depression and dwelling in regret and an overwhelming feeling that my life is not complete, that I cannot be happy, and that there is little point to getting up in the morning.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2008 Malted hop aroma, faint grassy smell. Flavour comes out weak...like hitting a brick wall and just sliding down. Mouthfeel is a bit slick and medium bodied. Some fine bitter notes in the aftertaste; but comes across more like a watery Pale Ale than a proper IPA. File under "meh..."
