MoDog (927) - Griffith, Indiana, USA - DEC 11, 2009
12oz bottle served in a tulip. Crystal clear amber pour with a one-finger thick head of beige foam that displayed some very good retention. Chunky rings of lacing clung to the sides of the glass. The aroma had thick bready malt, caramel, citrus, and tropical fruits. Pretty restrained with the aroma hops...especially for a fresh bottle. The flavor was also loaded with thick caramel and bready malt. There is a nice clean bitterness, but flavor wise, the hops are very faint. Just a hint of citrus. Medium-bodied with light carbonation. Where are the hops? For a DIPA, this is just plain dull.

Backlog rating 2-19-2009 (Bottle) This beer has a medium sized fizzy off-white head with good retention, transparent body, slow rising carbonation, one ring of lacing, and the hue of the body is golden. The aroma is caramel, malt, pine and citrus hops. The taste mimics the aroma plus some spice. The palate is tingly and this is a medium bodied beer. All-in-all this beer is very quaffable, worth trying and I would not only drink this beer again, but also recommend it.

Grey market bottle aged due to back-fridge secretion. Pours orange, rather turbid, with off-white head. Nose is tropical fruit, resiny hops. Tastes sticky, IBU-laden, with poneapple, tangerine, a solid malt bill, and a crisp finish. Reminds me of a Sly Fox Varietal IPA.

21-May-09 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 11-Dec-07 for $8.49/six-pack at BevMo in La Jolla, CA) Unintentionally aged in the back of the fridge for over a year, this double IPA is rounding into shape nicely for my tastes. Hops are still moderately bitter and bright with pine, grass, earth, dusty cobwebs, and a touch of perfume, while the malt backing is medium-sweet, caramely, toasty, and mildly earthy. Full-bodied and medium-strong in carbonation, but the hop bitterness is acute enough to keep the beer from weighing down the palate. The nose is fairly earthy and somewhat piney, so the aging has had more effect on the aroma than flavor. Golden-amber in color, fairly clear in appearance, and capped by nearly an inch of off-white head that settles to a thin layer, leaving a few spots of lace on the glass. Overall, a nice, steady double IPA that ages nicely.

A huge coppery head sits pretty with nowhere to go atop a copper-amber body clear as day and eager to please with a plethora of lace. As her head slowly fades into a rocky patch, her nose reaches out to me from her place sitting atop my coaster. I must confess, I do like it when a beer smells me out and not the other way around. Citrus, fruity, sappy, and sticky. Mandarin oranges, mango, pineapple, and lemon abound with zesty outer-skin esters, juicy insides, and dry pithy insides. Her nose has a wetness to it which carries the weight of hop juices and resins with customary aplomb. A job well done deserves to be noted as such and before I wrap these thirsty lips around hers, I enjoy one final addition of pine bark and green wood. Just what the doctor ordered, she is frothy up front, glides smoothly across my tongue, and hits long and hard in the back with hops galore. Smacking my lips, she leaves a layer of orange and mango stickiness. Bitter on top, juicy and sweet underneath, with the main feature show late in the middle and backside. Citrus skin, hop resins, and pine sap add to her sticky mouthfeel while the bitterness drying the top of my tongue grows in prominence. Each quaff pleases and then cleanses for the next. Very sessionable for an Imperial IPA, she nonetheless has plenty of flavors to go around. No need to sip here.

Mendocino Brewing has been around for quite a few years. Obviously they have used those years well to perfect their crafty art of tasty artisanal beers. Hereís to more years, more beers, and more pleasant tastings such as this one.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2010 Bottle poured into glass. Copper color, slightly hazy, med head that is very lacy around glass. Malt aroma more than hop aroma, Med body with creamy texture. Bitter hop finish. This beer has some promise, reminds me of Dogfish 90 min a little bit, but not as refined- a little more malt tasting. Would try again

This ale pours crystal clear copper with a creamy ivory head. The head leaves spotty lacing down the side of the glass. Sticking a nose into the glass reveals the most beautiful citrusy aroma from the hops. Copious amounts of grapefruit and tangerine with hints orange rind. Bitter, bitter, bitter. This one hits you it the mouth. Itís chewing on an orange rind bitter. The hops dominate but somehow a biscuity malt profile does manage to break through now and then. Mostly itís the bitterness, overpowering at times but thatís what you drink an imperial IPA, right? Itís hoppy in the finish and aftertaste. Full bodied. Nice IPA. Itís nice to break up the malty ones for once, right?

Pours an amber color with a white head. Aroma of mostly pine and citrus hops with some caramel malts. Flavor starts with malts and finishes with a strong citrus hops. Decent Beer.

part of my SNF winnings. Thanks for the opportunity to try this! A- Body is a hazy medium orange/amber hue that pours with a good 2-3 finger frothy white head that eventually dwindles down to 1/2 finger or so and has good retention from there. Plenty of lacing is left behind in the glass. S-Some citrus hops and a pretty big biscuit malt backbone. The overall impression is that this will be an IPA on the sweeter side. T- Initial flavor is mild and offers a mild pine hop flavor and subtle malt backbone. The flavors intensify for the finish with the main character being a moderate blast of refreshing pine. Underneath is a sweet caramel flavor and biscuit taste. What is left to linger is a mild to moderate residual hop bitterness and a hint of sweet, doughy biscuit. P-Mild carbonation and a thick heavy body loaded with hop oils and biscuit. O- This is a decent, above average IPA for me overall. My beef is the biscuit consistency (which really is mild)-its unnecessary and takes away from the overall character of the beer- Iím sure some people love this or donít even notice it-but its a big factor for me. Other than that this is a decent IPA...though it is kind of dull. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-11-2010 02:34:40

Aroma: heavy malt with moderate hoppiness and light yeast. Hint of tar, butterscotch, brown sugar, coriander and clove. Appearance: large size, rocky creamy off-white lasting head with good lacing. amber hued, normal body. Taste: heavy bitterness with heavy bitter long finish. Palate: full body, dry texture, lively carbonation and moderate stringent finish. Clear and polished. Oh baby! This is a fun, intriguing, complex beer. It refers to itself rather than extraneous cuisine: You do not pair this beer, it is the entire banquet. Why not a perfect score? Only God does it perfect.

Pours deep amber blonde with creamy off white head, fair lacing. Nose holds citrus hops, sugar, and wood notes. Nose carries over to palate-very creamy with resinous hops, light herbal notes and I caught notes of cinnamon/ginger (might just be the holiday spirit coming out). Not my fav Imp IPA but very drinkable and well rounded
