COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Jet black in color and full·bodied with a rich, creamy, long-lasting head. Robust, with luscious chocolate and coffee flavors, it is balanced with just the right amount of UK Golding hops. Brewed with massive quantities of oats, our Oatmeal Stout is smooth in the extreme. It pairs well with a wide range of hearty, full-flavored foods and delicious desserts. Our Oatmeal Stout is 6.0% alcohol by volume and 100% marvelous!”

Deep black pour with a minimal light brown bubbly head. I smell roasted coffee and maybe some molasses, but it is simple and a tad thin. Tastes exactly the same as it smell, but it definitely is thin. Palate is more carbonated than I like, but has a nice slightly chewy feel...somewhat bitter. It’s decent, nothing more. Way too fizzy.

Bottle. Big roasted malts, toasted oats, dark chocolate, lighter nutty notes, and light coffee. Beautifully rich and flavorful.

Bottle. Pours an opaque black-coffee color, with a thin beige head that disappeared faster than a 100 dollar bill in the middle of 31st Street. Nose is dark roasted coffee, malt and some toasted pumpernickel. Mouth is medium-bodied, with much of what the nose has, and the oats add smoothness. Nothing to write home about, but certainly drinkable.

12 oz. bottle pours black with a decent tan head and some lacing. Aroma is full of roasted malts, coffee, and some chocolate and vanilla. Taste is slightly sweet with a smoky finish. Body is medium with a lively mouthfeel, due to active carbonation. A very enjoyable stout which exceeded my expectations.

Bottle from Total Wine. Poured a little aggressively and you get a nice foamy tan head. It dissipates a bit but leaves you with a small rim around the glass. Roasty malt aroma with a bit of light grainiess to it. Flavor has a nice chocolatey aspect with a creamy texture. I am pleasantly surprised by this one here although I had low expectations. Finish is a little punchy and leaves a bit of alcohol bite.

Single bottle, Total Wine. Ink black pour, small creamy head. Clumpy lacing. A lot of chocolate, fig, and oatmeal in the aroma. Taste is roasted malt, raisin, dark chocolate. Kind of chalky finish. Medium body and carbonation.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2014 It pours a deep brown / near black color with a decent-sized light brown head that dissipates after a few minutes. It looks fairly average, a bit thin.

On first smell I get a good dose of semisweet chocolate, some touches of roast, and a bit of brown bread. It is appealing and totally appropriate for the style, but it doesn’t blow me away.

The flavor palate is mostly a combination of baking/semisweet chocolate or cocoa power, along with some roasted malt. There are hints of coffee mixed in. The flavors are good, but they don’t blow me away; it is a fairly simple profile. The finish is roasty with a touch of smoke. It ends well and is appropriate to style, but not overachieving.

The beer is highly drinkable, but it is a bit thinner than I would like given that it is an oatmeal stout. I expect a bit more substance when I’m drinking something from this style.

Overall, this is an approachable, safe beer that doesn’t offend, but it doesn’t wow either. It is a solid choice for the stout drinker as a pairing with food or on its own.

Poured into my Duck Rabbit pint glass. How much more black could this beer get? The answer is none. None more black. Creamy, thick head which was expected for an oatmeal stout. Has an aroma of caramel and maybe some fruity/earthy notes. Kind of hard for me to pin this one down. Good thicker mouthfeel to this beer. Finishes dry and roasty-toasty. Bits of molasses in the mid taste stick out to me. Overall, a pretty nice oatmeal stout. One I would pick up again. Not too Americanized.
