COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Jet black in color and full·bodied with a rich, creamy, long-lasting head. Robust, with luscious chocolate and coffee flavors, it is balanced with just the right amount of UK Golding hops. Brewed with massive quantities of oats, our Oatmeal Stout is smooth in the extreme. It pairs well with a wide range of hearty, full-flavored foods and delicious desserts. Our Oatmeal Stout is 6.0% alcohol by volume and 100% marvelous!”

Bottle. Black, small light brown creamy head, fair lacing and good retention. Great roasted malt aroma. The usual suspects are here: molasses, chocolate, coffee, toasty caramel. Mouth is medium-full with creamy carbonation, lightly dry. Flavor is lightly sweet with some coffee bean bitterness, and a mildly hoppy long finish. I am beginning to think that this is one of the easier styles to get right. A lot of breweries do it well. The Mendocino is a solid offering. Very tasty and true to form.

Bottle. Nose roasty with chocolate, sweet with very light Golding and relatively more vanilla. Pours dark ruby but coal-black in the glass with a fizzy light brown head. Taste off-dry with pockets of red berry fruity sweetness poking through the soft and coating mocha and coffee creaminess, touch tart with light bitterness but there’s a good balance between all these elements. Light body but not watery, has a good level of maltiness for being so light (I’d have said in 4% abv territory), little bits of ash and yeast in the finish but neither overdone there, either. Love to see the restraint! The chocolate and roast might be a bit off-putting by the third bottle, but certainly not for those first two!

Restrained dark roast malt taste, oaty smooth, not too sweet chocolate, some coffee, slight British bitterness. Soft carbonation, medium bodied, lightly hopped. Easy drinking, nice. 12 oz. bottle. Pours a thick, well retained beige head, with some lacing, over a black, brown (SRM 35) body....nose is chocolate light coffee from the roasted malts, light herbal notes from the hops....taste is slightly sweet with roasted malts tones including cocoa, chocolate, coffee, leading to a moderate hop bitterness.....mouth feel, body medium heavy, creamy, slightly oily, minimal alcohol, carbonation adds tingle and soft acid. This is a good example of the style. It is malt dominated, with nice roasted malt character, light balancing hops, and superb body. BJCP 8/3/15/5/7

12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch and a half tan head after a strong pour. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like roasted malt, oats, coffee, and chocolate. I think the taste is just like the aroma, except that that there’s a bit of dark fruitiness noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s creamy and has a good amount of carbonation. I think it’s a good Oatmeal Stout, definitely worth trying.
