In my view, the classic Irish porter. In many ways, it's Guinness+ in every category - just think of Guinness and double the tastes! It looks absolutely superb with it's collar of off-white foam and the aroma is teasingly subtle. The flavour is smooth and integrated with the obvious roasted barley but hints of liquorice, dark chocolate, toffee and treacle as well as a strong bitterness. A nutty, roasted and bitter finish demands more. Classic stuff and my drink of choice when in Dublin. (sampled on draught in Messrs Maguires, Dublin)

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a deep, dark black with a thick, creamy, off-white head (nitro pushed, just like all other stouts here in Dublin). The aroma is a bit more than other stouts here - some roasted grains, some chocolate, and some earthy hops. The flavor is quite luxurious. The texture is velvety and complements the flavor quite well, which has notes of coffee and chocolate and less hop aroma and flavor than other dry Irish stouts. The finish is dry with an after-taste like a mocha - rich coffee with hints of chocolate.

On tap-Messrs, nice, clean, dark ruby colour. Chocolatey aroma, deliciously sweet. Chocolate flavour, mild roast coffee taste, somewhat vanilla sweetness, lacking slightly in body, but very tasty, and very easy drinking.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This was the best of the beers tasted. The pub is well worth visiting on the Liffy near the O’Connell Bridge. The stout poured pitch black with tan head that laced down the glass. You detect the aroma of coffee and smoke at the beginning. The stout was a medium body beverage with soft carbonation. The stout had a dry finish with rich coffee aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tap. Almost black body. Creamy off white head. Sweet roasted aroma. Hints of tar and old smoke. Dry flavour, but also sweet, especially in the finish. The finish also reveals a tiny chocolate flavour. Like a Guinness with more aroma and flavour. (Messrs. Maguire Pub, Dublin, 05.05.08)

Draft pint at the brewpub.Standard look, black with firm white top. Smooth like most stouts around here, but with a nice extra bitter edge. Slightly ashy. (#3675, 9/16/2009)
