molassesfan (201), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jan 30, 2007 Pours dark with a thin off-white head. Aroma is barely there, just a hint of chocolate malt. Taste is also lacking, but this one isn’t really offensive in any way. Palate is too thin for something this dark. OK in a pinch, but there is much better out there. dctriman (4), USA does not count Jan 28, 2007 I was actually really surprised by this beer. I wouldn’t expect much from a large brewing company like Anheiser Busch, but this beer is actually fairly tasty. SwillNoMore (105), USA Jan 21, 2007 Bottle, from non-dimpled mug, at 55F. Born on 11 Sep ’06. White bubbly head is almost acceptable. Color is medium-brown/dark-amber; quite nice really. Aroma is much too weak, especially considering the color -- I expected more. What’s there is a [very] faint chocolaty note. Body is leaning towards the good side of light. Texture is leaning towards creamy. Neither quite makes it, but they try. Flavor of caramel; lightly chocolate. Finishes with a light roasted bitterness. Not great, or even very good, but a valiant effort for this macro brand. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jan 19, 2007 Draught at Putters during happy hour on 1/18/2007 before the Barleywine/Old Ale tasting...
Michelob Amber Bock pours a very clear, rich amber color. It has a creamy off-white head that does last long. The aroma and flavor are light caramel malt, a weak hoppiness, and some malt alcohol. Moderately sweet. Not over carbonated or fizzy. Smooth, but a bit thin at times on the palate. Overall this isn’t a bad dark lager. I’ve been a long time supporter of Michelob’s line of "specialty beers" and have actually become somewhat mildy impressed by their attempts. They are generally good and fit the style, but not over the top, unique, or memorable like the other great beers in the class. It really astounds me how Michelob was able to capture and convert many American Light Beer drinkers through their extensive Amber Bock marketing campaigns several years ago. Some of them have since drifted back to their Coors Light and whatever, but many will still reach for a Michelob Amber Bock as their second choice! Never underestimate the power of marketing... cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 19, 2007 Updated: Dec 31, 2007Had this many times in the past but wanted to give it a fair shake and rate it as I drink. So it is not a memory ticker. My results may be biased. This is an old favorite ‘dark’ brew from before the days of rating beer. I really wanted to compare this to the newer porter and barvarian wheat beers AB recently came out with. Slight yeast roasty aroma after I twist off the cap on the 12 oz brown bottle. Dark brown but not opaque color. Has some orangish hint in hue as well. A well behaved initial smooth flavor that is very gentle-manly like. Very good flavor that is easy to like. It is finished, refined and processed. Good tingly carbonation that makes it creamy and easy to enjoy. This is in the same class as shiner boch and killiams red. I may even have to say it is right up there with yuenglings black and tan. Nice creamy release of bubbles after each sip. Finish leaves you wanting more, not rebellious in any way. Enjoyable, fun, dark, repeatable.
Optigon (561), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jan 18, 2007 Not a bad beer from a macro. Little head, dark brown coloration. A bit of a sweet malty quality with a light hop finish. A bit of an after-taste comes about, which is less than pleasing, but an okay macro beer. For practical application, this makes for a good party beer, in that it pleases those who like some flavor in their beer, but isn’t so foreign that those who aren’t into good beer aren’t taken aback. mcclenw (36), Stevenson, Alabama, USA Jan 18, 2007 This is the better beer of AB. This is a drinkable beer, pretty smooth (considering), nice head and aroma. Lacing is actually pretty good on this beer when on draft. Highly drinkable for game day! faroeviking (6016), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Jan 17, 2007 Well, this is actually the best beer I have tasted from A&B. Nice amber colour with a rather short medium head. Malty bit sweet aroma. Flavour is malty, waterish, bit caramellic, little nutty.
