Tried this many times over the years, but just getting around to rating - Pours a very nice deep amber / russet color--one of the best qualities of this beer. Aroma is not offensive, but hardly detectable as well. Quite a nice glass of drinkable malts, but thin as hell too. It’s not bad for mass produced stuff. Actually, one of my highest-rated widely distributed big name beers.

Tap. Had this at Parrots bar last Tuesday. Pours a mahogany color with an off white head. Pretty bland and lifeless, but it is a good stepping stone to darker beers.

From the tap poured a dark brown color with a fair amount of head. Sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.

bottle. Poured clear reddish brown with a thin beige head. Light aroma of caramel and alcohol. Mouthfeel is thin and quaffable. Light caramel malt flavour, a little roasty, medium bitterness. A good beer for those who are afraid to try anything other than Bud or Coors.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of caramel and roasted malts. Flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malts and caramel. Metallic finish. Not bad for A-B. Drinkable.

12oz bottle pours super dark brown almost black with dark head. Aromas of toasted malts and cereals. flavor is bitter and a bit roasty, a bit of water cuts the taste. Body is on the light side and finish leaves a lager taste

Tasted 9/24/2011 from bottle into standard pint glass. Decent translucent amber color. Tan head with slight retention. Balanced, but no apparent aroma hops. Clean, malty taste, almost no aftertaste. Overly metallic carbonation like all A-B beers. Not a bock, of course, but still an enjoyable dark lager. As with many other beer drinkers, this was one of the first "dark beers" I tried, and remains the ONLY one available at many basic bars and restaurants. Tell the truth...you still like it pretty well, too.

About the only beer i have tried from AB that i can drink more than one of, if you are looking for a beer that you can find on any shelf when traveling it is not that bad

This is what I would consider my "gateway" beer. Before this I only drank the run of the mill macro-light brews...but let’s be honest, I wasn’t quite of age yet so my options were limited. Pours a dark brown with an off-white head. Not much in the way of aromas, maybe some malts in there and some nuttiness, but not much else. Tastes has some remnants of malty sweetness and some bitterness, but overall a watery mouthfeel. This beer holds a special place for me because this is the beer that opened my eyes to the world of craft beer. Although it’s by far not the best, its not a bad beer, and surprising that it’s brewed by a macro.

Tap. Pours a dark amber. A little roast malt flavor. Too watery though. Have had in the bottle too.
