Commercial Description:
Celis White has been revived by Michigan Brewing Company with the blessing of its founder and his daughter, Christine Celis. The original Celis White, brewed in Austin, TX by Pierre Celis during the early and mid 1990's, ceased production when Mr. Celis closed his Austin microbrewery and moved to Belgium.

(Bottle) Poured a cloudy pale yellow with a medium frothy head. Had a light body with medium complexity. Descent American version of a Belgian white.

Lighter wit, but cloudy, slightly peppery and thirst quenching. Lemony/orange nose is nice. Gets a bit gritty at the finish.

Pours as pale as the moon, but with a head the size and color of the Artic landscape. I must admit that Witbier is one of my most despised beer styles, however this Celis White is probably amongst the best I have had, but GD I have had some really nasty ones though.
Loads of orange zest in the flavor and aroma, but has that wheaty, white pepper presence as well. Like I said, its one of the better wits out there.

Lemon sugar nose. Some chalky tartness. Some white pepper flavors. Good, but there it is a little harsh with a dry gritty feel.

Aroma is citrusy (slightly sour) with definite hints of coriander. Pours a hazy golden yellow, very appealing. Flavor is sweet and citrusy up front with a spicy and slighly hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is suprisingly good - almost a creamy feeling. Belgian Whites are one of my favorite styles, and this one is near the top of my list of the American versions.

Draft, on premise. 2003 GABF Gold Medalist.
Not my style, but even I can tell it’s excellent. A whitish yellow body brings in a fine wheat and creamy taste. More hoppines than in others I've tried in this style, which adds to the citrusy aspect. Also plenty of coriander and grains of paradise spices. A refreshing summer beer dressed up a “special occation” brew.

Just to clarify: Pete Celis’ original operation in Austin, TX was purchased by Miller, which later shut it down because it couldn’t make a megabrewer type of margin. Celis sold the brand to Michigan Brewing, which is now happily turning out this 2003 GABF Gold Medalist. Texas remains their primary market, meaning less for us up north!

Man, not impressed at all. I had high hopes for this one, too. Pours a straw color and very cloudy with just a little bit of head and no lacing. Ho hum. Smell is of cloves and a few faint fruit esters. Taste is very lacking and there's some off-flavors. There's clove and some other spice but it seems like clove was added to cover the other tastes. It's not good at all. Mouthfeel is barely average. Drinkability? Um, pass.

My first Texan beer. Looks like a pilsner in the glass same yellow gold color & head but the smell is definitely that of a Belgian white. Smells like lemons. Carbonation. Very smooth. You can taste the citrus almost overpowering but tasty and light. This is a very good beer.
