Celis White has been revived by Michigan Brewing Company with the blessing of its founder and his daughter, Christine Celis. The original Celis White, brewed in Austin, TX by Pierre Celis during the early and mid 1990’s, ceased production when Mr. Celis closed his Austin microbrewery and moved to Belgium.

In 2002, Michigan Brewing Company acquired Celis, and Celis beers were back in production. Michigan Brewing continued the production of Celis beers until its closure in 2012. In June 2012, the Celis trademark made its way back to the Celis family. In 2014, Christine Celis began having Pierre Celis’ original recipes brewed at Two Roads Brewery in Connecticut.

Poured a very light straw color with a very small white head. Really liked the way it looked in the pint glass. Smelled alright, earthy, and sweet flowery malt. First sip was allright, but as I went on, it was apparent that you could not drink too many of these. Taste was a little acidic in the beginning, then finished with a lot of banana flavors which remained with th

Had this back in the day in Hopdevil pub, one of the first beer pubs in Zagreb, now closed. When Alen from Svijet piva (World of Beer) got it on tap, he invited me for a drink and was praising this beer as one of the best. Murky, almost opaque yellow, medium white head, medium lasting. Citrus, lemon wafer. Bitterish, spicy, sourish, lively, sweet. Drinkable. Very good actually.

Rated from old notes. Taste is yeast and wheat, with a strong clove note and citric undertone. Similar to a Hoegaarden, but with more body and more taste. Very good stuff. Nice to see it is being made again.

Bottle to glass. Nose is a moderately spicy and earthy herbal aroma. Not exactly inviting. Not getting much coriander. Smells stale. Lightly hazy pale gold with small white head, tight bubbles. Taste is grainy wheat followed by a peppery presence. Seems overly spiced in the flavor. Not good.

Very aromatic, citrus and banana. Huge rocky head which coats the sides. Light gold with a bit more clarity than I expect from a wit. Taste is slighly soapy with less body than I like in a wit.

Bits of unfiltered yeast settle at the bottom. Has a bit of a sour taste; banana and lime flavors come through. Lingers, and finishes a little oily. Detect some cloves and a little white pepper. Overall a decent offering.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle dated 02/11/15. Served roughly 45 degrees. Hazy pale yellow pour with white foamy head that fades. The aroma has all of the Witbier esters I would hope for including mellow toasted malts, crackers, light spice, orange peel, and wheat. Light body. The taste has the same toasty and mellow herbal quality with a slightly bitter finale. They did this one right.

BOD 12/23/14. Pours a cloudy gold. Normal head volume, lacing and retention. Outstanding classic Belgian nose of clove, banana, hint of hops, light biscuit and Belgian yeast. As it warms, lemon notes emerge. Light medium body with a bit of silkiness to the smooth texture. World class carbonation with a nice effervescent middle and a rollicking finely bubbled prickly finish. The flavor profile is very good. Intensity is reasonable, as is balance. The shortcoming is complexity whereas the flavors don’t separate well and come across in a blended, somewhat muted, fashion. Clove is the predominate flavor and the others from the nose are blended underneath. You really have to look for them. The finish is a mild slow fade of phenolic clove.

Lemon-gold with a thin head and a peppery, clove, banana nose. Easy intro with a mild palate followed by a banana and peppery finish.

10/26/2007 9:52:09 AM Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Orange hazy. Nose of grapefruit, citrus. Tart taste. Fruits and lemon taste. Some grapefruit and citrus as well. Too sour for my taste. But appreciate a good beer.
