COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Contains a notable amount of rye grain in the grist bill. Bitterness is slightly moderate to allow the often spicy and sour-like rye characteristics to pull through.

Good session beer. Pours transparent amber, thin off white head. Aroma is slightly earthy. Taste is bitter, not an overpowering sourness from the rye. Medium carbonation. Leaves the mouth quickly.

12oz Hand Labeled Bottle and served in no-nik pint glass: Golden hue with some very small yeast floaties topped by a small but lasting white frothy head. The aroma has notes of caramel, wet bready grains, apple and pear esters, rye, and some phenols. The taste starts sweet but the rye snap and mild hop bitters balance it out nicely. Nice twangy fruity component and a even a dash of honey adds depth. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing, medium-bodied however there is a metallic astringent note upon the finish that is a tad distracting. Overall a very solid brew in which the rye is a player, could stand a bit more noble hops however.

12oz Hand Labeled Bottle I was lucky enough to receive this from hoppymeal, thanks again Derek! Michigan Brewing’s Rye Bock pours a deep golden with a highlight here and there leaning toward copper. Light sediment is suspended throughout. A finger worth of bubbly slightly off white head formed on the pour and as the bubbles burst fell to a thin cap that left some small spots of lace after each drink. This beer smells like there’s a good deal of rye used in the brewing. I’m hit right off the bat with lightly toasted malts and a touch of sweet bread. There’s a touch of orchard fruit, such as peach and pear, flashing through quickly before the spicy rye and alcohol hit the nose. This bock smells really nice. The flavor follows exactly what the aroma suggested. Lightly toasted grains start things off and are quickly met with a hint of tripel like orchard fruits before the spicy rye and alcohol mixture kick in. The rye is unique enough but the fruitiness really adds a great depth. I’m really enjoying the flavor of this beer. The body is moderate but feels lighter with the decent amount of carbonation present. This beer really flows through easily. The carbonation is smooth and subtle but pushes this brew through easily. This is a very good, flavorful, sessionable beer. I would love to be able to pick these up down the street; they’d be a mainstay in the fridge. This is a tasty rye bock. My first from Michigan Brewing Co. and definitely not my last. They will be a new stop on my next trip up North. Thanks for the treat Derek! 6/17/08

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Dirty straw-colored body, thin off-white head. Cerealy, grassy body, grainy, with warming alcohol and modest bitterness. Tangy, watery finish. I didn’t pick up too much rye, and the thin body detracted from my enjoyment of this beer.

Draught at Coles, Buffalo, NY. Pours a clear bubbly yellow-amber with an average size diminishing white head. Mild aroma of rye malt, grain and some sweetness. Flavour’s the same: Light rye malt, a bit sweet and a light bitter finish. A bit of fruit thrown in there too. Medium bodied. Pretty good, I enjoyed this.

On tap at Cole’s Buffalo. Dark yellow/almost amber, small white head. Mild nutty aroma with some rye present. I enjoyed the taste - sweet, rye malt, nice to medium to thin body a, a little nuttiness. Some nice dark fruit as well. This one was fresh and really worked for me.

tap: not impressed: super thin, rye flavor not at all present, and the sourness advertised here is not desirable in the least. Kind of a mess. very disappointed.
