This pale ale is named after writer and explorer Rudyard Kipling. The immense hoppy citrus and floral aroma and flavor of this brew are created by the American and English hops utilized during the brewing process. In addition, notes of caramel can be detected in the flavor. This brew is similar to our English-style and American-style pale ales with a much stronger hop and malt character. Also, available on nitro pour...smooth!

From notes. First reviewed 7/6/2010. On tap at Mickey Finnís in a pint glass. The beer has a slightly hazy dark golden / copper color with just barely a ring of a head. No lacing, very little visible carbonation. The aroma is hops - they describe the smell in the menu as hoppy and I cannot do better. After my first whiff, I am hoping the flavor does not mimic this flat, one dimensional smell. Unfortunately, it does. The flavor is listed as "very hoppy (citrus)," and I agree, except for the citrus part. Barely any flavor is able to sneak through this palette-destroying hop nuke. It is painfully obvious from the first sip forward that they just throw a ton of bittering hops in, forgetting that adding hops later in the process will add "flavor" and "aroma." After half a glass, the taste is pungent and cloying. Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, medium body. Some graininess and a fair amount of hop oil. I would never order this again. It is definitely the worst IPA I have ever had. A stark comparison to their Hefe, which I enjoyed. Almost curious enough to try to get the recipe from the brewmaster just to post it as a warning.

Sampled at AleFest Chicago. Poured a fairly clear orange/amber with an average, off white foam and clingy lacing. The aroma was floral, with citrus and some resin following up. The flavor added to these some caramel and a balancing, appropriate hop bitterness. A refreshing, basic IPA.

Cask @ Day of the Living Ales. Pours copper with a thin white head. I had this one right after Lunar Brewingís Moondance IPA and this one wasnít as good. Still decent aroma of citrus hops. Bitter finish. Decent IPA.

clear gold, light off white head, no lace of which to speak. aroma is mild grapefruit, hints of pine. more flavorful than the nose suggests, with grapefruit, pine and a hint of pepper, nicely balanced. perhaps a suggestion of creamy caramel. medium bodied, bitter pine finish. quite enjoyably bitter. sampled at day of the living ales, 2009.

Clear amber with a tight head. Nice piney and floral hop aroma. Medium body. Mild flavor is sweet piney hop juice riding a bready malt base. Nicely bitter to finish.

Draught sampler: Clingy head over an enticing copper IPA body. Smell shows a nice bit of hop to it. Taste shows it is not a hop bomb, but itís very nicely laid out; lemon and pine with some English hops in balance (thatís what I thought before I saw the description, so Iím actually improving my palate!). A nice combination of US and UK style.
Nitro sampler: Toward the end of my sampler tour, this still shows a star-shaped bit of foam in my glass. Carbonation is a little firm for a nitro, but pinprickly and enjoyable. Nitro gives the caramel malt more room to play

On nitro. Poured a clear medium caramel with a short cap of creamy off-white headÖ creamy lacing followed it down. The aroma was muted by the nitro treatment.. but pine, floral, and some sweet caramel seep through.. picks up steam as it warms. The flavor was really carried by sticky vegetal and pine notes.. did not enjoy that very much.. caramel base.. left rather sharp pine and vegetal notes on a long-ish finish. Slick beginning becomes tacky and ugly feeling the rest of the way across the palate. Not good.

(03.18.06) On tap at Mickey Finnís, Libertyville, IL. Clear amber hued IPA with a tiny white head. No discernable carbonation. Light hop aroma. Medium bodied that starts with light malt sweetness and light hop flavor. Slight hop bitterness in the mouth. Finishes dry with light hop bitterness. The hop flavor component was underwhelming. This beer is styled closer to a pale ale, than a IPA. Though this is a good drinkable beer, hopheads will be disappointed.

Decent enough APA but too tame to be considered an IPA I think! Some pine and grapefruit hopping over the caramel malt base. I picked up a faint trace of solvent, that thankfully was very transitory. Iíd drink this again, but not if I was in the mood for a real IPA.

Sampled at Night of the Living Ales II. A translucent orange with white frothy head. Pine and floral hops along with citrus and caramel malts. A standard but decent IPA.
