Had this in a growler from the brewery, and bottled. Poured a dark orang-amber with moderate head. Smelled sweet and had a weak alcoholic aroma mixed in with the malts and some hints of fruit. Medium-bodied, and tasted of malts, very smooth and went down warm, but not too much alcohol taste. I had this beer over the summer, but I think it would be best enjoyed during the winter months.

Let me start by noting that I’ve never been a massive fan of this style, it’s often a bit too much for me, and I do like assertive beers. The problem I often found with barleywines is that they are so flavorful, that you can’t really take it on unless it’s a 12 oz. bottle, and seldom that is actuality. For me personally, Middle Ages hit the mark. Druid fluid bucks the tradition. The aroma is full of a medley of fruit, not at all from the norm. The dark fruits take a balanced feel to the lighter fruits. The burn off alcohol is not excessive . The beer is a cloudy orangey-brown body topped by a medium off-white head that rapidly fades. The body is really not heavy considering the style. And with the refined fruit character also lies a hop note as well. The feel is medium bodied, Softer in texture and carbonation, and not a beat down on the finish. This beer might actually make me venture to the barleywine section again.

Bottle at The Brickskeller, Washington DC
Hazy light amber color. Light caramel aroma and medium caramel flavor; strong bitterness, above average. More a generic American Strong Ale than a Barley Wine, it doesn’t have the malt flavor, and it has just partially some hop resins. It lacks any depth.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This barleywine pours an attrive amber color with an orange hue. The head is slightly off-white and sticks like glue to the sides of the glass. The nose features notes of hops, light grains, alcohol, bread, yeast and fruits. The body’s texture is very lively and active. The flavors are quite hoppy up front and then again later on in the finish. Some other features include grain, bread, grapes, dark fruits, citrus and light leather. There is a huge note of alcohol in this beer, especially in the finish. Overall, this is a very delicious barleywine.

Thanks to JW77. Reddish pour. Aroma is somewhat average for the style. Some spicy hops, honey, alcohol and citrus peel. Flavor is lightly sweet with a good citrus hop bite.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Not bad, though I would not say that this stands out among barley wines. There was certainly the deep color and flavor with a lightly alcoholic aroma.

650 ml bottle. From the US (H). Shared with Brandman. Ruby red colour with small off-white head. Aroma is weak berry, sweet hoppy and alcohol. First hoppy, sweetish flavour with long-lasting berry and boozy aftertaste. Dry. Not very balanced.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Pours dark brown with a light head. Nose is bitter with a hop forward character and light toasty pale malt. The flavor is also bitter with a light sweet undertone. Not balanced. Needs a little more fruity balance, caramel and just body. Not my favorite.
