3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (12oz). Poured almost opaque reddish-black with a small quick-diminishing light-brown head. Rich but mild dark roast malt, hints of espresso and roast nuts, aroma also has prune, cola and molasses character, with detectable resiny hops and quite a lot of yeast - I fully agree with BeerLover, this seems a happy union of scotch ale and full-roast porter. Taste reminds me of a flatter, thinner, slightly burnt Samuel Smith Imperial Stout - strong bitter roast character muted by lots of malt and dark fruit, longish mostly bitter finish. Mouthfeel almost oily - flat and bitter, quite nice. Really strong beer, I"m most impressed.

7/8/12. 12oz bottle thanks to Robert! Nice brown pour with reds on the edges under a thick khaki head. Funky yeasty aroma with touches of sourness, chocolate, and alcohol. Slightly sweet entry with some smokey aspects and some sourness going on. Eh.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle shared with tupalev. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with an average size diminishing frothy off-white head. Sweet aroma of chocolate and caramel malt. Flavour also sweet and malty, some chocolate and some very mild wood and smoke -- I can definitely taste the Scotch Ale aspect of it though Iím not so certain it works that well. Thin bodied. A decent Porter but a bit dissapointing.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 6, 2004 Rerate: On tap, The head was wonderful on the pour and no metallic finish this time, I love this beer, underrated....1st rate: Near black, hint of brown hue at bottom of glass. Creamy average head, fair lacing. Medium to full- bodied. Moderate malt aroma with undertones of molasses and mild coffee. Also fruity components of raisin, plum and a minor smokey nose. Dry porter taste, hint of fruit and smoke. Exceptional balance. A bit thin and metallic finish, is only knock against this beer. A scotish/porter hybrid, unique, recommended.

Bottle, 2 years old. Dark brown with red and lace. Oxidized aroma, winy, with roasted malt, chocolate, berries and raisin. Flavor of wood, charcoal, roasty malt, dark chocolate. Very light body, think and fizzy. Decent. Probably better fresh.

[3487B-20101120] Tap. Little woody roast malt aroma. Black body with a quick foamy light tan head. Big roasty grains flavour has a long roast malt aftertaste. Full body is a little boozy and bitter. Good, drinkable. (7/3/7/3/15) 3.5

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle thanks to George. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium beige head. The aroma is heavy malts, light caramel and dried plums and other fruit. The flavor is very much like a Scotch Ale; loads of rich toasted malts, some coffee and chocolates, some more metallic roasted notes as well. Like a mix of a Scotch Ale and Porter. Nice! Easygoing and smooth.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Way too much roasted barley for a porter, and not too smooth either. Appearance is good however. Nice dark brown almost black with a huge large-bubbled head which subsides to a nice slight to mod. head. Leaves some lace as well. Aroma has slight smokiness but is dominated by roasted malts. Flavor is roasted and some caramel malts but the heavy carbonation ruins much of the flavor and mouthfeel. Would be a lot better if it wasnt so carbonated.
