Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. SLOTH Belgian-style Imperial Stout is deliberately dark as hell. The pour is slow and sluggish. Its head is menacing, becoming torn and tattered Belgian lace on the sides of the glass as you cautiously consume this brew—sip by insidious sip. The aroma is sweet from heavy malt and big alcohol with notes of vanilla, coconut and whiskey from the oak. The depth & breadth of roasted malt flavors loiters on the palate while the robust finish lingers, well, forever. SLOTH...Just add couch.

Bottle at epic STL tasting, thanks boys! Pour is deep black with small tan head. Aroma and flavor is full of musty and earthy with hints of cocoa, light alcohol, and notes of faint fruit. Flavor is smooth chocolate and cocoa powder with hints of chocolate and faint coffee. Very nice.

Huge thanks to AgentZero for making this happen. Served in a Midnight Sun goblet. Pours near-black with a short off-white head and not much in the way of lacing. The nose has a pretty heavy amount of roast with some light barrel character. Some chocolate and just a bit of vanilla in the background. Not getting much from the Belgian yeast at this point. Flavor is similar and fairly muted. Seems a bit oxidized. Heavy malt character with roast and chocolate. A bit undercarbonated. Nice, but just seems to fall flat like it’s well past its prime, unfortunately. Still, very fun to try.

Another long time want provided by Mike. I can’t think of another stout that I’ve wanted to try more than this. In typical Midnight Sun fashion, Sloth pours pitch black with a small amount of cocoa colored head. Nose is a balance of chocolate and tannins. A good amount of red wine still comes through actually. Flavor is cocoa, red wine, and oak. Mouthfeel is thick and slightly oily, a little thin for MS, light carbonation, and a long finish. Reminds me a lot of Bar Fly actually. It doesn’t have much of the Belgian character I thought it would, but that doesn’t detract from the beer. Solid imperial stout.

Draft at Tap Root Beer and Mead Social: Poured a thick black sludge with a light brown head. Aroma was complex with dark malts, hints of fruit and woodsy. Taste is a blast of roasted malts, dark fermented fruit, and nice warming booziness finish. Very smooth overall but complex if that makes sense. This beer has held up well and was a pleasure to get a sample of.

6oz pour at the brewpub. Bit surprized that this was on tap, I had asked for Oakage TREAT but that was out and this was on. Glad to have tried this excellent brew. . Pours rich dark brown, with huge milkshake thick head. Great nose of dark fruit and chocolate. I get tastes of chocolate, coffee, earth, plums, roasted barley, and vanilla. Great palate and slight boozy finish. Wonderful.

22oz bomber shared at Seth’s house. Dark brown/black pour with a chocolate head. Good lacing with wood, chocolate cake, and dark fruit aromas. All kinds of wood, dark roasted malts, baker’s chocolate, and whiskey notes. Dry and very woody. The whiskey was somewhat bland with maybe a hint of peat. As it warmed up, the stout opened up and got better..

22oz bomber. A - Pours black, no head, thing ring around the glass. S - Chocolate, coffee beams, cream, slightly bitter, nice roasty notes. Very solid, but coming from MS, it doesn’t surprise me. T - Bitter dark chocolate, creamy rich chocolate, roasty notes, vanilla sweetness, and some oak. So rich and decadent, so f’n good. M - Full, slick, rich, smooth, bitter finish. D - Awesome. So good. MS comes through yet again with another winner. Not a whole lot of Belgian characteristics, but who gives a crap, it’s good.

100th rating for this beer. 22 oz. bottle shared by dbsdelight- thanks, Dan! I think this was another one originally from Keir. 2008 vintage. Pours a dark opaque brown with a small dark tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, Belgian yeast, dark fruits, roasted caramel malts, and molasses. Flavor of dark fruits (figs, plums), roasted malts, coffee, brown sugar, and molasses. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation and a chewy mouthfeel. Really nice Belgian-style imperial stout that has held up great for 3 years.

Bottle shared by Hophead22 at his big stout tasting. Dark black pour with small tan head. Aroma was coffee, licorice, and somewhat grassy. Taste was booze, almonds, milk choc bars and cocoa. Fizzy nice carb. Overall an nice treat.

Had this on tap this weekend (1/15/11) as a "breakfast beer" (with food of course!) at Humpy’s just before going to the GABBWF. What a surprise treat! Colour...imagine black fountain pen ink with a tan head! Nose... not much of Belgium here but lots and lots of dates, raisins, currants and bittersweet chocolate. Palate...man oh man! This may not have much CO2, but this beast more than makes up for it with this raft of flavours....Don Pedro Ximenez sherry, Medjool dates, dark raisins, black currants, treacle, deeply roasted malts, Christmas pudding, dark loam, intense booze, crushed vanilla beans and a finish that does not quit. This has done very well with age, even if it doesn’t seem all that Belgian-like. What a wonderful, and rare, on-tap treat!
