4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: AUG 19, 2009 Big thanks to savnac for this one. Pour is beautiful deep brown with a huge tan head. Aroma is very rich; full of brown sugar, vanilla, notes of wood, and dried fruits. Flavor is luscious and full. Roasted malt, vanilla and light sweetness to start. Then the barrel comes through; wood, fruits, and the Cab comes through way at the end. It lingers. It’s earthy with plums, dates, and a hint of sweetness. Alcohol is no where to be found. Wow, wonderful stuff.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
22oz bottle. Opened up this bad boy to celebrate National Homebrew Day. The aroma is dominated by the Cabernet Sauvignon barrels (wine, fruit, oak, alcohol). Deep brown with a huge bubbly head that leaves an even bigger lace. The taste is mostly sweet, there are toasted malt, wine, and alcohol flavors. The mouth feel is incredible very silky smooth with a mild carbonation and a slightly dry finish. An incredible beer, I can’t believe this is over 14% abv, the flavors are perfectly balanced.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle pours dark brown/black with a very thick tan head. Aroma was pretty intense. Very much a dark roast malt, some caramel, and some dark fruit. Heavy mouthfeel. Flavor was butterscotch, caramel, malt, vanilla, and finished with a slightly malty sweet twang from the booze. But not over the top. Was done very nicely. Thanks Mike for sharing this one.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
JW77--thanks a ton, Jonathon. 22oz bomber--very excited to try this. Clear deep reddish brown with w big three finger beige head, great retention. Red wine and oak is unmistakable in the aroma (though it is by no means dominant). There is also plenty of caramel, light strawberries, sweet cream and vanilla, raisins and candi sugar, and some faint Belgian yeast. The flavor adds a fair amount of peppery alcohol, as well as a little tinge of roast. Dry finish with bitterness @ a 3-4.Overcarbonated with a full thick body. Good.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
22 oz bottle. Deep, dark brown with a creamy tan coating. Wet lacy sheets that disappear into specks. Nose is dark berries and chocolate cake. Oak and raisin as it warms. Tangy at first but smooths out nicely. Lush, sticky, almost full body. You can feel the alcohol but the bite is well covered. Taste is chocolate, raisin, caramel and vanilla with a touch of red wine. Absolutely decadent but maybe a bit too much.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Appearance: Pours a clearish, dark amber body with a small, though creamy-looking, beige-colored head.
Smell: Toasty, biscuity malts with rich, expressive notes of spicy hops, anise oil, a distant red wine barrel, and dried fruits from a trail mix served up with a shot of clean liquor.
Taste: Pale malts along with a maltiness delivering a taste of toasted biscuit tops sweetened with a sprinkling of brown sugar and, why not, some simple table sugar. Touch of dried fruit. Spicy hops display a light, brief bitterness. Add in a full tablespoon of Ouzo. Drying, leathery tannins leech in, as does a lesser hint of red wine. Pinch of chocolate shavings. The strong alcohol presence is definitely evident, but the heavy, dense layers of flavor and complexities help to turn your attention away from it. Return of the anise liqueur for the sweetish, very warming finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Moderate carbonation, which thoughtfully helps to prevent any cloying syrupiness.
Drinkability: Surprisingly drinkable considering the ABV percentage. Though Venus is an inhospitable, downright hellish place, it’s namesake beer is one to soak in and savor.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with AmEricanbrew. Pours a very deep brown with some mahogany when held against light. Large, fluffy brown head that hangs around until the final sip and coats the glass fully. Gorgeous brew. Very pleasant aroma of caramel, vanilla, oak, candi sugar, prunes and raisins. The flavor is equally enjoyable with caramel, molasses, vanilla, oak, candi sugar, and raisins. Fiarly smooth on the palate, especially for a beer with such a high abv. There is only a trace of warmth towards the finish from the alcohol. Excellent.

pours a dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is predominantly of alcohol with undertones of spice. Tastes like candied raisins and molasses with a spice and alcohol aftertaste. Well bodied good beer.
