4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours dark brown with a large, creamy, off-white head, mostly lasting with excellent, thick lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toffee), light hop (grass), average yeast (earth, broth) with notes of figs, dates, apples, oak, wine, and vanilla. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a sweet, slightly dry finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness and acidity, light bitterness.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2008 bomber. Poured a lovely shade of deep brown with a fairly short-lived toasted beige head. The aroma picked up a healthy dose of decadent maltage (biscuity notes, chocolate, and licorice joined by a host of lesser players) topped by warm vinous notes, a kiss of berries, honeysuckle, and peppery alcohol.. no doubt that this was large and in charge, but it somehow held its balance too! The flavor opened with tart vinous notes and oak plus spicy boozage.. licorice led across the middle, joined by rich biscuits and a little cocoa.. oak rounded out the belly-warming finish nicely.. a little oxidation showed up, but it left more of a dignified presence than anything. Heavy-bodied with filling carbonation on the palate.. creamy and almost buttery across the middle.. really great stuff!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2014 year of the whale tasting #1. Hazy dark brown color with lasting tan head. Big sherry, port wine aromas with toffee, spicy yeast, wet wood. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Earthy sweet toasted caramel, dark fruits, dark bread flavors with sweet spicy anise, port wine, nutty flavors___holding up pretty well actually

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz. bottle, sent from BrewtopiaofPJ (thanks a lot, Mark), pours a deep dark mahogany / dark brown with a fairly large foamy beige head. Aroma of red wine barrels, alcohol and dark fruits - very boozy, vinous and complex. Flavour brings out loads of raisins, red wine, caramel and booze. Very raisin-y, with quite a bit of sweet caramel and moderate red wine notes. The near-15% is incredibly well-concealed. It is a big cloyingly sweet, but very well-rounded nevertheless. Drinkable in small doses. Good stuff, but highly overrated.

Opaque black beer with a big pale tan head. he head imparts an amazingly vibrant treacle toffee! Palate is smooth and semi dry. Dark toffee malt cream with lovely red wine on top, it’s mellow and fruity. Semi dry finish. Delightful! Different and full of flavour.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I had this soon after it came out and then got treated to a bottle at the home of "AKfaust" when I was up in ANC for the 2012 GABBF. Colour... dark golden amber with no head. Nose... hints of the cabernet come through as well as the oak and aromas reminiscent of Oloroso sherry. Palate... it’s lost some of its CO2 and there a smidgen of oxidation but this one still sings with caramel, toffee, dried ’cots, dates and marzipan all leading to a resoundingly sweet and slightly dry finish.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours amber in color with a big off-white head. There’s a little bit of wine and booze on the aroma. A really nice dak fruit and sweet caramel malt aroma. Might even be some chocolate. The flavor is quite nice. Lots of chocolate and dark fruit notes. A really nice Cabernet flavor. Solid stuff. Medium and medium.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This poured a lighter to medium murky brown colorw ith a small beige head. Aroma was lots of dark fruits, plums, red grapes, some toffee and light cardboard form oxidation. Flavor was very smooth for the strength of this bad boy, nice spicey yeast notes, many dark fruits, tannins, and some sherry too. Pretty decent.

1.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20
Had this at the 2011 Pittsburgh Ratebeer Christmas Eve Eve Tasting. Big thanks to Mr Chopin for this very unique and valuable beer. Big cream soda looking pour with a big head. Weird aroma, very sweet-ish for lack of a better descriptor. Taste is wew, quite alky and certainly holds its own on letting you know its 14%, perhaps more. Over the top in more than beer personality. Did I say alky is present? Once again Kevin kicks my ass in a tasting and now I would do well to forget about trying any other beer. MY TASTE BUDS ARE FRIED! Please Kevin, get me a gallon of water to cleanse my cheapie lager loven’ palate! Can this really be called beer? This wanna bee quad, like most american quads, leaves something to be desired when compared to the real refined beldgy quads such as Het Kapittel Watou Abt.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Brown-orange, beige foam. Aroma is definitely oxidized malt, caramel, cocoa, brown sugar. Taste is loads of brown sugar, is definitely again oxidized, but pleasant mix of sherry, not too cardboardy.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
dark plum brown, thin, lasting beige head. Heavy date and malt, light bit of tea and sugar but very low. No yeast. Flavor is more traditional quad, more dry nut and date at front, sugar emerging mid, burnt and more malt in the lengthy, Malty finish. No heat, light oxidation, moderate body, very dry.
