Bottle shared by Mike. Thanks! Pours thick jet black with than head. Aroma is roasted malt and smoke. Dense and creamy mouthfeel. Almost as if it was made with oats. Taste was very nice meld of smoke, peat, coffee, roasted malt, and an herbal note. Very nice beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Batch 1. At about 4 years old, this is one that was better a while back. The smoke has given was to fruity raisiny oxidation, overwhelming the subtle fruitiness this beer has from the red wine barrels, vanilla?s faded leaving mild soy sauce notes and a nice rich stout base. The palate is similar with rich, fruity oxidation, raisins, mild toffee, dark chocolate and blackberry jam. Despite my criticism, this is very good, just not as special as it once was.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2014 vintage clocking in at 11.6%.
Aroma is very rich with lots of dark chocolate, some molasses and roast and a nice moderate smokiness. Smoke has a bit of a peat character to it but also some hard wood. Moderate bourbon character with some light oak notes. Some light notes of dark fruit, especially prune and plum.
Pours a motor oil black with a small, moderately thick, dark mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges. Light lacing with sheets of alcohol turning to long legs.
Flavor has a moderate sweetness to it with a lot of chocolate and molasses. Medium roast notes with some tobacco and leather. Moderate smoke notes with more peat than hard wood, but some hard wood is present. Light dark fruit notes of plum, raisin and prune. Medium light bourbon notes with light alcohol spice and faint oak notes.
Mouthfeel is full bodied and oily with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a really nice, big, rich stout. When cold the roast was a bit rough, but as it warmed it blended really well and became an amazing beer. Lots of chocolate and roast notes with some complimentary bourbon notes.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: AUG 8, 2014 6oz draft at Brouwers. Rebrew, needs to be unretired. Super black with brown head. All autolysis nose, sopping roast, not as boozy as expected. Lots if autolysis in flavor with some mineral roast, low acidity, chalky bakers chocolate. Despite all that its way better and easier than similar soy sauce brews.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Brouwers. Pours thick, opaque, viscous, with giant dense creamy mocha head. Aroma: raisins and plums; scratch that, prune juice. Smells like condensed prune juice. Smoke is there, leather. Alcohol surprisingly not pronounced. Mollasses and prunes steeping in soy sauce. Does not bode well. Tastes better than it smells, though. Moderately sweet; alcohol present but well-integrated; not particularly smoky, roasty bitter finish leading into alcohol warmth. Rich thick chocolate on the back. Palate: Thick, viscous, chewy. Fantastic texture. Overall: thick and chewy sweet imperial stout that smells gross but tastes good.
