3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 brystmar (455) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - MAR 3, 2013
Smoked beers: my nemesis! Fortunately, Bar Fly chose the more noble route of well-balanced smokiness than the rigorous assault seen in many of its peers. Rich, creamy flavors and body start to finish. Booze blends particularly nicely in this brew, using itself as a full-blown component of the flavor profile rather than a side product.
A pretty darn good stout, particularly for the style.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - DEC 9, 2012
Bottle shared at Zwanze Day 2012. Thanks. Pours a richer deep brooding blackish pour. Dark and opaque, the edges show just a faint light of brownish glow. A frothy brown head dies to a film and laces ok. Darker and ominous. Aromas offer roast and toast, smokey malts, cocoa and coffee. Firm heat, vanilla, and oak. Firm full stouty big flavors overwhelm the senses. Initial is bigger bodied, roasty and toasty off the bat with dry cocoa, coffee, and smokey malts. Vanilla, smooth silky malts into the middle with oak, spirit, and gentle heat. Toasty and roasty, cocoa and caramel, toast, smokey and roasty malts. Backend shows firm cocoa, chocolate and powerful smoke and roast. Really dig that. Finish is a bit dry and resiny, some darkness, lingering roast and smoke trail for awhile in the finish with cocoa, roast, gentle heat and really nice lingering flavors on the palate. Really nice offering if you dig the smoke and roast elements. Can see others really not enjoying this.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Huhzubendah (1979) - Washington DC, USA - OCT 30, 2012
Bottle shared by craytonic. Thanks Matt.
The beer is on the verge of black, with a wispy, thin beige cap. The aroma is of heavy roast, booze, oak, chocolate, and hints of vanilla. The flavor is toasty, with booze and chocolates. Vanilla and oak flavors are there as well. Soft smokey, campfire notes. The feel is thick, with fairly low carbonation. Booze lingers on the palate, offering a delicate warmth. Well done. While alcohol is present, it’s well integrated into the taste profile and completely unobtrusive. This beer is not the usual imperial stout. Unique and refined. Recommended.
