3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is black with a broken sheet of toasted graham foam. When I first cracked this beer and took a whiff off the bottle, it smelled great. Now that I’ve poured the beer and let it breath for a few minutes, we have chocolate banana oatmeal. There’s some molasses and booze there too, a touch of spiced grains and warm milk. Flavor is sweet, roasted, some metal, some oats, plenty of cocoa and burnt toast, maybe a touch of coconut as it warms. Medium on full bodied with really low carbonation - this all comes together beautifully; honestly a really, really fine body and feel with a wet finish. I’m kinda torn on this beer, on one hand I really dig it, on the other, I think it’s an absolute strikeout for the style. Fuck it, grading to taste.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at apex. Holy shit, this stuff is dark, and I've never seen such a dark cap on a beer. It looked wonderful as it spilled over the glass a bit. Aroma of dark chocolate and grain, not specific to rye. Taste is supreme dark chocolate and coffee, with a heavy wood backbone, and rye spice skin. Very dry finish, and cripes does it coat the mouth.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle @ Steve’s house, courtesy of arminjewell. Thanks! Pours a deep brown/black appearance with a thin brown head. Anise, herbal, somewhat bitter, dark chocolate, fig, dark fruity aroma. A bit goopy, dark chocolate, light caramel, licorice, slightly sweet, a touch boozy, fig flavor. Carbonation is a bit low. Pretty tasty but not my favorite.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Haven’t had too many Midnight Sun brews, so I was super excited about this one. It was good, but just didn’t live up to my hopes and dreams. Aroma of dark bitter chocolate, tobacco, thick molasses. The viscosity was just a tad under my desired level. The taste was milk cocoa, dark roasted malts, some dashes of rye spice that perhaps leads to an unsettling finish. Not bad, just off a bit. Perhaps the rye is not my friend.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011 bottle from SHIG (quite a while ago). Aroma is chocolate, soy, rye, black cherry, and burnt sugar. Flavor is much of the same with the soy, rye and burnt sugar taking center stage, but this is a very complex beast. Palate loses points for the moderate carbonation, but has a nice, thick mouthfeel that is rather oily. Excellent beer, pleasantly surprised.
