Sampled at Seattle International Beer Fest 2014 (delayed rate). Super hazy, super-cloudy amber. Little to no head. Sticky toffee / fruity nose, with a woodsy vanilla. Slightly boozy flavor, but not too bad -- brings a bit of an herbal note. Sticky toffee runs through the flavor, and boy, this one will knock you on your back without you knowing it. Some earthiness from the rye, but this is generally just a big, thick sticky, gooey mess.

Bottle thanks to Shig. Pours orange amber off white head. Nose/taste of rye, whiskey, oak, candi sugar, butterscotch, earthy and grassy citrus and wheat/banana. Full bodied.

Bottle traded from AkAndy (many thanks). Shared with friends. Aroma is wheat, grassy hop, vanilla and caramel. Pours golden with a nice wispy head and lingering lace. Taste is butterscotch, earthy hop, vodka, wheat, and vanilla. No real sign of the alcohol other than the barrel tastes. Still a little fresh but I donít know how much better this would be with age. A little off.

Hazy amber, sweet canned peach nose, similar elements on the palate. Soft, fruity, malt-forward but reasonably dry finish.

Bottle, slightly cloudy amber body, nice creamy white head, god lacing. Aroma raisin and fruit, whiskey. Taste is raisin, whiskey, vanilla, banana, apple. Finish is bitter sweet, with a little whiskey burn. Palate is smooth and rich, almost chewy, carbonation is subdued.

22. Pours a murky medium amber with a dense and creamy light tan head that sticks around for quite a while, leaving a decent pile of mousse even at the bottom. Big bright vinous nose, maybe hints of lemon and a bit of sage, but overall very much like a chablis. How the wheat and whiskey combined to produce this exact note isnít really clear, but it does smell very winey. Sticky thick body with sluggish carb. Body has big tangy sweet residual malt sugars knocking around along with some sweetness from the wood; big combo of tangy wheat, vanilla, white wine, and lightly toasted caramel. Very curious to see where this one might be in a couple years, but most of the flavor profile tilts sweet so it might not be a cellar candidate.

Though labeled a "barleywine" by true nature of this style, this is actually a "wheatwine" which is slightly different. Though Iím being pestered by a friend who is not usually here in Juneau with me, Iíd like to tell him to go the fuck away, here is my take on what I can come up with at the moment (I hope to be back just in case I donít do this beer its credit). This was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a semi-hazy brown color with a sly tinge of red along the sides. There is a slight transparency but no carbonation is seen rising. There is a film of a head to lower to a tad of a concave lacing around the sides. The smell has a fair amount of boozy grainy light plum-like fruitinesss all over. The taste was basically the same with a sticky taste all over. On the palate, this one sat at a medium on the body with a fairly decent sesssionability about it. Overall, in my opinion, this was a pretty good Wheatwine that I would have again.

SHIG (3650) - Wasilla, Alaska, USA - AUG 8, 2014
Bottle: Poured a caramel copper color with no head to light floating bubbles. Aroma is vanilla and whiskey. Taste is sticky fruit, vanilla, whiskey, and a dry tongue finish.
