3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured a deep brown color with aromas of light candied dates, dark fruit, light caramel, some roast, and a touch of booze. Flavors were a mixture of the aromas, nice beer overall, couldn’t drink a ton of this, but a nice night cap.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle provided undercover by Brian. Thanks!
A: Black body, mocha head.
N: Smoke, licorice, molasses, cocoa, coffee, lactic acid, cinnamon, peppercorn, rye, tobacco.
T: Sour coffee - with the implications of bitter and sour.
M: Medium body, slightly oily.
O: This is definitely in the ’black’ saison category, but unfortunately that doesn’t save it, since black saisons aren’t any good. This one was so desirable...before.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours deep brown with a beige head. Toffee malts, very light roasted malty notes, hints of spices, and a light grainy base. Pretty good.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by ibrew2or3 @ Woodshed 3.0! Dark mahogany pour bordering black body with a creamy khaki head. Bready, nougat, maple, tart cherry, dark fruit, yeast, and spicy rye. Some oak, some ash, some merlot. Definitely some semblance of an infection but not undrinkable. Glad I had a chance to try this!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Brown pour, light brownish head. So the combination of sweet malts, Belgium yeast, fruity esters combine fairly well with barrels. Certainly not as bad as many make it out to be.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Barleywine rating #500
22oz bomber generously offered to me by SHIG. Thanks Shawn!!! It pours with a dark mahogany body the supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up brown sugar dusted plums, dates malts and molasses. Alright. The taste begins with brown sugar, molasses and then a modest tart note that seems kind of tannin kind of resiny hop bitterness and it shreds and crashes right into the smooth sweet goodness. To midway the fruity esters are noticed with plums and dates and ripe cherry sweetness. These flavors come together pretty darn well and I’m really enjoying this experience. I like it!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Reviewed from notes. Consumed May 5, 2014.
Into a chalice.
The appearance had a semi-dark brown to black color with a two finger white foamy head that leaves a super amount of clingy foamy lacing.
The smell had a large amount of Belgian sugars leaving some nice spiciness in the dark fruits that end up coming across once it warmed.
The taste was spicy and sweet with the sugars, fruits and Belgian spices coming across in a pretty good way. The aftertaste was spicy and sweet leaving a dry finish.
On the palate, it sat about a medium to heavy with a nice Belgian spicy coating laying across my mouth and tongue and amplified a pretty good cherishing sweetness all over.
Overall, I liked this one a lot and would welcome it again if ever given the chance.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle @ 10K + OT. Thanks, GT. Dark brown pour with a massive tan head that fills the glass. Aroma is ashy, acidic, and overly roasty. Tart berry and raisin, wood, and toasted malt. A hint of banana and some chocolate/cocoa powder. Taste is bitter and quite acidic...very carbonic and overcarbonated. Sour blackberry, raisin, and plum. Woody dryness. Quite a bit of roast and some ash. Hints of sweet malt and fruit esters. Disappointing.

> Infection transforms this into a black saison
[ Bottle ][ savnac ][ 22oz ][ 10K+OT Tasting ][ Stemless Wine Taster ][ 5/3/14 ]
>> This is known to be infected, but Ira and I kept this beer always fridge to stymy infection perhaps. Didn’t work. Pours a dark black with massive black saison type of rocky mocha foam. Nose is bright barrel, cocoa, lemon, blackberry. Taste is aerated, ashy, cocoa powdery, super dry and tannic. Essentially this is a black saison. Palate is aerated, dry, powdery. Odd one.
>!< It’s Belgian style, but not barleywine
