2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle @ 10K + OT. Thanks, GT. Dark brown pour with a massive tan head that fills the glass. Aroma is ashy, acidic, and overly roasty. Tart berry and raisin, wood, and toasted malt. A hint of banana and some chocolate/cocoa powder. Taste is bitter and quite acidic...very carbonic and overcarbonated. Sour blackberry, raisin, and plum. Woody dryness. Quite a bit of roast and some ash. Hints of sweet malt and fruit esters. Disappointing.

Brown pour, light brownish head. So the combination of sweet malts, Belgium yeast, fruity esters combine fairly well with barrels. Certainly not as bad as many make it out to be.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAY 1, 2014 Bottle... darkguardian’s & biggsbowler’s West Palm Beach Birthday Bash!... Pours dark brown (practically black) with a small, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Sweet chocolate and bittersweet fudge are the highlights of both the bouquet and the flavor. Finishes acrid, bittersweet and roasty. Great stuff. In five or six years, this will be as sought-after as M currently is. Muchos kudos to newcigarz for sharing this bottle!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle @ Steve’s house, courtesy of arminjewell. Pours a dark brown appearance with a fizzy brown head. Red wine, roasty chocolate, caramel, fig, dark fruity aroma. Tangy, dark berry, fig, plum, red wine, caramel, chocolate, a bit sugary flavor that is well carbonated. Quite smooth for the alcohol level. Pretty tasty. Thanks Armin.

> Infection transforms this into a black saison
[ Bottle ][ savnac ][ 22oz ][ 10K+OT Tasting ][ Stemless Wine Taster ][ 5/3/14 ]
>> This is known to be infected, but Ira and I kept this beer always fridge to stymy infection perhaps. Didn’t work. Pours a dark black with massive black saison type of rocky mocha foam. Nose is bright barrel, cocoa, lemon, blackberry. Taste is aerated, ashy, cocoa powdery, super dry and tannic. Essentially this is a black saison. Palate is aerated, dry, powdery. Odd one.
>!< It’s Belgian style, but not barleywine

Huge wine notes in this one. Sticky and vinous. No semblance of a barelywine here. They could ave just called it a dubbel.

Bottle at James’ for the multi-K tasting. Pours a deep black with a medium to thin tan head. Red wine and wood on the nose, warm wood and sweet malt and caramel. Roast and cocoa. Long chocolate and malt, warming caramel and alcohol. Tasty enough. Still don’t like barleywines.
