Beer Description: This Belgian witbier begins with equal parts malted wheat and pale barley to create its traditional cloudy white appearance. The addition of Brettanomyces gives ANCHOR its trademark "green apple" or "horse blanket" aroma and lends tartness to the flavor and finish. At over 6% ABV, this ANCHOR’s got a bit of more kick than most wits.

2009 Crew Brew Series: Heading into 2009, the NINE of us will each designnamebrew a beer to be released in 2009. We are all very excited about this series. It’s a great way to “freeze” this time and space – right before we jump into the new place and add new folks. These NINE beers will be fabulously eclectic and delicious.

Creator of This Beer: Since joining MSBC in 1998, Gabe has worked and mastered the complete gamut of jobs in our brewery. As Head Brewer, he uses his accumulation of brewing knowledge and experience to continually conceptualize and create amazing beers. With oak-barrel aging, a multitude of yeast strains and a plethora of processes in back pocket, Gabe is now experimenting with Brettanomyces and other "bugs". This beer combines his long-standing favorite beer style, witbier, with his new BFF, Brettanomyces. Raise your Anchor!

Thanks to Alex here...Bottle into a tulip...Pours a super light and watery yellow, gusher with great retention and lacing...Aroma is a little light but complex; orange peel, brett, a little coriander. Not as strong funk wise as I thought a brett wit would be...The taste is not as exciting at all, tastes more like a wit than the aroma with a funk finish. Its flat and dead, a light chalk finish with some spice. Interesting beer and concept, just not executed totally. Needs a little more funk from the brett.

Bottle... Poured a pale yellowish with a white head. Some strong white tones with a nice spiciness and then a kick of brett funk. Some nice esters and very dry.

A: The pour is a cloudy orange color with a bit white head. S: Woah is there a funkiness to this nose. Quite musty and spicy with a bit of woody note to it as well. Green apple, lemon, and an overall barnyard aroma. T: This beer is intensely dry with a mildly spiced flavor, nowhere near as much as usual for a witbier, but certainly there. A lot of bready wheat is there too, as is the same fruitiness of the nose and still lots of Brettanomyces funk. M: The body is medium with a fairly aggressive carbonation and a very dry finish. D: If you like the intense funk from the wild yeast, this is actually a pretty nice beer.

22 oz bottle shared by beastiefan2k. Pour is a light yellow white with a foamy white head. Aroma is light citrus, some earthy leathery Brett. Taste is a smooth wheat grain, Brett spice lemon citrus along with mild floral spice. Taste is really well integrated. Palate is light to medium, really active carbonation, dry clean finish. Nice, thanks Eugene.

Bomber thanks to akbeerfiend on BA. Pours hazy yellow in color with a large bubbly white head that fades to thick foam. Thick lacing. Aroma is very lemony and bretty with wheat and a little spice. Fairly subtle. The flavor is subtle and wheaty, but nice. A little orange and lemon, with bretty funk. Not really sour at all. Carbonation level is too high and makes the beer seem a little thin. Other than that though, it’s a solid brew.

11/29/2009: Midnight Sun Anchor (Witbier with Brett)... Aroma: Light fruits and spice; hint of Brett. Appearance: Hazy bright yellow, golden hue; frothy, dissipating crown. Flavor: Moderately sweet with fruity overtones; clementine; cotton candy; slightly floral. Palate: Medium-light body; feels light and airy. Overall: Decent; refreshing.

22 fl. oz. bottle ( 9.2% alcohol by volume; 20 IBU) from the Midnight Sun Brewery in Anchorage, Alaska. Rating #44 for this beer.

A: Pours a pale yellow with a tall white head. Very little retention with some spotty lace. S: Aromas of lemon, hay, flowers, and fresh cut grass. There is a tartness and light barnyard funk as well. T: Much much light the aromas. Bright citrus, herbal and floral notes. Hints of barnyard, and a nice mild tartness. M: On the lighter side of medium in body, smooth tart finish.
