Commercial Description:
Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. Though the recipe and process for Arctic Devil have evolved over the years, it is typically brewed in January then aged in oak barrels for several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In its youth, Arctic Devil gnarls and snarls its way across the palate. Containing this beast of a beer for long periods in oak barrels--some having previously aged port, wine or whiskey--tames the unleashed malt and fierce hop flavors, melding and mellowing this powerful liquid into an incredible elixir worthy of a brewer's table. Each annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers' resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Distinct nuance and complexity are contributed by the wood's previous tenants, resulting in unique flavor profiles in each batch that continue to change over time. We invite you to savor Arctic Devil Barley Wine upon its release then cellar some for future enjoyment.

From the Bottle at Indulgences Etc, Denver 23/09/2009 Big hop and malt aromas. Amber coloured strong in alcohol and a little sweet on the palate with a little dryness in a warming malt finish.

bottle courtesy of ajm, thank you! nice intense bw! pours a thick oily, muddy brown color, barely translucent. aroma is very nice, lots of sweetness, tons of hot bourbon and port, some licorice and mollases as well. taste is nice and robust, just slightly too sweet for my taste in a bw. lots of complex notes, sweet, burned caramel and vanilla, bourbon and wine/port notes are easily detectable. mouthfeel is really nice, this stuff would def keep you warm in the frigid cold!

Coutesy of Brad. Hazy dark amber with a medium beige head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, overripe fruits and caramel notes. Sweet flavour with hoppy, caramel, roasted malt and ripe fruits. Finished sweet with warming alcohol. Just not the day for it I’m afraid, though I fully appreciate it.

Bottle. 2009. Amber-mahogony beer with a dark cream colored head. Whiskey and rich malt aroma. Rich malt and whiskey flavor with light fruit and light smokiness. Fuller bodied. Rich malt and whiskey lingers with light cocoa and light smoke.

Pours dark clear brown. Buckets of hops in the nose with chocolate covered caramels. Some nice cherry as well. This thing has tons of hot alcohol, but there’s still plenty of malt and hops. Good stuff, but I’d hoped for better.

Dark red brown color with a tan head. The aroma is strong with cough syrup, plum, cherry, caramel, and molasses. Lots of particulates in a very thick and syrupy brew: flavors of molasses, cherry cough syrup, caramel, and lots of alcohol abound. A very potent beer.

Bottle shared at Logan’s pre-GABF party. Light brown pour. Toffee, brown sugar, and grapefruit aroma. Syrupy sweet and pineapple flavor. Much better than my mediocre description. An outstanding barleywine.
