Commercial Description:
Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. Though the recipe and process for Arctic Devil have evolved over the years, it is typically brewed in January then aged in oak barrels for several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In its youth, Arctic Devil gnarls and snarls its way across the palate. Containing this beast of a beer for long periods in oak barrels--some having previously aged port, wine or whiskey--tames the unleashed malt and fierce hop flavors, melding and mellowing this powerful liquid into an incredible elixir worthy of a brewer's table. Each annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers' resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Distinct nuance and complexity are contributed by the wood's previous tenants, resulting in unique flavor profiles in each batch that continue to change over time. We invite you to savor Arctic Devil Barley Wine upon its release then cellar some for future enjoyment.

This is an impressive beer. Aroma of English hops, and a barleywine in the English style. lightly sweet, with plums and other fruits. Very low carbonation, nearly still. It is rare to find a barlleywine like this. A good surprise.

Very sweet barleywine, a bit cloying and in serious need of more aging. Very sweet caramel flavor up front, the hops just exhausted from even thinking about where to begin. A bit hot on the palate, some excess alcohol comes through. Good but needs to age a bit to let the malts and alcohol settle more.

Big courtesy of Skyview. Cloudy brown color with no head. Tons of brown sugar and raisins in the aroma. Some light oak and vanilla, too. The taste is fantastic. The strong malt base is both dry and chalky, and sweet and syrupy. Lots of nut, chocolate, sugar. A bit of oak again. Killer.

Picked up a 22-oz bomber from Liquid Solutions in Oregon. Pours a hazy light amber brown brew with a thin tan head that slowly dissipates to a fine swirly film top. Aroma of figs, raisins, dark pitted fruits, some caramel and a touch of chocolate. Taste is full bodied, lightly carbonated with flavors of caramel malt, raisins, figs, a touch of bourbon, vanilla and cotton candy. Finish has a nice alcohol warmth with a light vanilla and caramel aftertaste. Normally I like to age barley wines for a few years to allow proper aging. This barley wine after eight months turned out better than I anticipated.

(Bottle, thanks to omhper) Pours dark brown with a sand colour head. The aroma is heavily malty sweet with clear tones of caramel alongside light resiny and citric hops. Some alcohol warmth with hints of acetone. Undertones of earth, orange chocolate and dried fruits like prunes and raisins. Subtle wood hints. The flavour is heavily malty and light hoppy with sweet tones of caramel, milk chocolate and dried fruits. The mouthfeel is full/fat, syrupy and oily. Full bodied. Nice, I like.

Purchased online, poured into a Duvel tulip Appearance is dense brown-black hue, huge tan pillowy head sticks around like a marshmallow, watery lacing Smell is delicious, dark fruits and sweet malts dominate, heavy presence of bourbon wood accents harkens to an Angel’s Share aroma, molasses, vanilla, anise, caramel, and alcohol round out this impressive profile Taste is equally enjoyable, initially dominated by sweet malts, raisins/figs, and bourbon, transitions quickly to vanilla and milk chocolate sweetness, some caramel and anise in the background, finishes with light bitterness Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, velvety creamy texture coats the whole mouth in pillowy goodness, balanced carbonation Drinkability is moderate, the alcohol presence is hard to avoid in a strong b-wine like this but the flavors and complexity make up for the high abv, nice post-dinner drink that you will want to enjoy slowly and probably wouldn’t drink all night long

Pours red-brown with a light brown head. Has a sweet aroma of brandy, plums, dates and chocolate. The flavor is of brandy and caramel with a slight hint of nuts. Full bodied with a creamy texture. Barley wines have never been my prefered drink, but this stuff nealy converted me.

Bottle thanks to kyzr, 2005 bottling. Great, English style barely wine. Pours with a light brown head covering a muddy brown (red-tinged) body. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, plums, cohocolate, vanilla, and dark pitted fruits. Taste is boozy, with caramel, some nuts, brandy, dark fruits and a bit of cotton candy. Heavy, very creamy with light carbonation. Great northwest beer, thanks Mitch!
