Aug 25, 2008 (Bottle, thanks to omhper) Pours dark brown with a sand colour head. The aroma is heavily malty sweet with clear tones of caramel alongside light resiny and citric hops. Some alcohol warmth with hints of acetone. Undertones of earth, orange chocolate and dried fruits like prunes and raisins. Subtle wood hints. The flavour is heavily malty and light hoppy with sweet tones of caramel, milk chocolate and dried fruits. The mouthfeel is full/fat, syrupy and oily. Full bodied. Nice, I like.

Appearance is dense brown-black hue, huge tan pillowy head sticks around like a marshmallow, watery lacing
Smell is delicious, dark fruits and sweet malts dominate, heavy presence of bourbon wood accents harkens to an Angel’s Share aroma, molasses, vanilla, anise, caramel, and alcohol round out this impressive profile
Taste is equally enjoyable, initially dominated by sweet malts, raisins/figs, and bourbon, transitions quickly to vanilla and milk chocolate sweetness, some caramel and anise in the background, finishes with light bitterness
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, velvety creamy texture coats the whole mouth in pillowy goodness, balanced carbonation
Drinkability is moderate, the alcohol presence is hard to avoid in a strong b-wine like this but the flavors and complexity make up for the high abv, nice post-dinner drink that you will want to enjoy slowly and probably wouldn’t drink all night long

Aug 13, 2008 Updated: Aug 15, 2008Pours red-brown with a light brown head. Has a sweet aroma of brandy, plums, dates and chocolate. The flavor is of brandy and caramel with a slight hint of nuts. Full bodied with a creamy texture. Barley wines have never been my prefered drink, but this stuff nealy converted me.

Aug 13, 2008 Bottle thanks to kyzr, 2005 bottling. Great, English style barely wine. Pours with a light brown head covering a muddy brown (red-tinged) body. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, plums, cohocolate, vanilla, and dark pitted fruits. Taste is boozy, with caramel, some nuts, brandy, dark fruits and a bit of cotton candy. Heavy, very creamy with light carbonation. Great northwest beer, thanks Mitch!

Aug 12, 2008 (BCTC, 22oz bottle, thanks kmweaver) Minimal beige head atop brown body. Aroma is medium sweet, orange/grapefruit, raisin, caramel. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, earthy/grapefruit, some alcohol warming. Medium-full body.

Aug 10, 2008 Pours a deep, deep copper with a two-finger buttery head which linger throughout and leaves sporadic lacing. Aroma is big on dark fruits, figs and raisins mainly, and caramel malts. Alcohol burn really comes out as it warms. Taste is big and roasty, with dark fruits dominating. Toffee and caramel malts are present throughout with a definite alcohol burn and a hint of oak in the finish. Mouthfeel is incredible and silky smooth with strong carbonation. This is definitely a sipper and a fantastic barleywine.

Aug 8, 2008 05 bottle sampled at the RBSG 08 Grand Tasting. Big thanks to whoever brought it. Pours golden brown with a tan head that leaves wet spotty lacing. Deep caramel aroma with some leafiness. Tobacco? Hops? Flavor is toffee based, with notes of prune, molasses, berries, and wood. Finish is earthy with some vanilla. Full bodied with a very smooth mouthfeel.

Aug 6, 2008 22 fl oz bottle, 05 vintage. Pours clear and golden amber with a lacing tan head. Aroma is dense malty and fruity. Mild roasted malt and solid fruity and malty with a nice hoppy note. Smooth and fruity finish yet also quite warming finish.
