RCL (1443), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA Apr 18, 2008 Tons of dried fruit. Like dates and grape nuts. Spicy, strong, and super rich with quite a bit of hops. The alcohol shows through a bit, but this is quite good. sirpsycho (342), Murrysville, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 13, 2008 Bottle. Pours a cloudy, brownish-red, very slight off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt and alcohol. Flavor is creamy and thick, dominated by malt and brown sugar, maybe some caramel and sherry also. Bitter finish with an alcohol burn. I’m going to lay one down for a year or two and see how it turns out, I think this one will age well. TheEpeeist (1429), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 11, 2008 22 oz bottle, 2005. Dark brown with suspended specks and tan haze. Nose of caramel and prune with a touch of alcohol. Taste is caramel, fig and, surprisingly, red and black licorice with a touch of mocha. Still retains some bitter grass bite. Unique and delicious. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Apr 7, 2008 22 ounce bottle brought back from Anchorage for me by my coworker Amanda (thanks!), served at cellar temp or so from a Chouffe tulip. Dark caramel-cream head half-fills the glass, smooth but bubbling away quickly atop the darkly translucent molasses body....nose is plummy, rum-soaked cherries, hints of vanilla and old port, faintly alcoholic but quite pleasantly so, lots of caramel....on the tongue, quite sweet but with some woody dryness showing up quickly, lovely thick, rich and malted-milkshake mouthfeel but there is something of a cardboard character to the finish that really hurts....this lessens a bit with warmth, and the end result is a very good, though not quite excellent, sweet and thick and low-on-the-hops barley wine. JohnC (2227), Mission Viejo, California, USA Apr 6, 2008 This was from a two year old bottle that steiny shared.
Excellent barleywine, tasty, rich malty. wow. I gotta get more of this. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Apr 5, 2008 This is by far and away, pound for pound one of the best barleywines in the world in my opinion. Just a beast, but balanced. Rich and smooth, with lots of dates, and brown sugar, and maple nuts. Sweet without being cloying and so well balanced, you would never know it was such a high gravity beer. This years will need to lay down for several months, but as in past vintages it ages extremely well, pick this one up after about 6 months in the cellar and enjoy. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Mar 27, 2008 Updated: Oct 21, 200807 bottle thanks to NYbeer, thanks Stephen! Poured a deep caramel-amber color with a thin beige head that diminished to a ring. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and light citrus zest. Smooth, sweet caramel malts with flavors of molasses, and brown sugar leads into a slightly bitter, fruity finish with light citrus and a earthy hoppiness along with a drying oak finish. Smooth and thick on the palate with a nice drying character. Very good beer, thanks again Stephen. t4h2c0 (80), seattle, Washington, USA Mar 17, 2008 On tap at hardliver 07 at Brouwers. This was the best barley wine there by far! Aged in bourbon barrels this beer pours brownish and has a complex nose that will clear your sinuses. This beer will tear you up at 14% and thats just what i’m looking for. Rare and hard to get so try it if you ever get the chance. One of the best barley wines around!!!!!
