Commercial Description:
Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. Though the recipe and process for Arctic Devil have evolved over the years, it is typically brewed in January then aged in oak barrels for several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In its youth, Arctic Devil gnarls and snarls its way across the palate. Containing this beast of a beer for long periods in oak barrels--some having previously aged port, wine or whiskey--tames the unleashed malt and fierce hop flavors, melding and mellowing this powerful liquid into an incredible elixir worthy of a brewer's table. Each annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers' resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Distinct nuance and complexity are contributed by the wood's previous tenants, resulting in unique flavor profiles in each batch that continue to change over time. We invite you to savor Arctic Devil Barley Wine upon its release then cellar some for future enjoyment.

Sampled at a gathering of TN Ratebeerians a couple months ago; thanks to Springslicker for bringing it (obained via trade with footbalm). In my opinion, this was the star of the Nashville Tasting. Transluscent hazy brown; tan head diminishes to a heavy dusting. Smells like golden raisins soaked in port, bourbon and chocolate; in other words, smells rich as all hell, and strong. Full and smooth in the mouth; rich and pensive. Buttery full burnt caramel blending in the mouth with a thick bar of melted semi-sweet chocolate. Velvety in texture. Flavors linger long into the finish without adding much else, except maybe a little butterscotch. Made me imagine taking long sips of this from a snifter in a mahogany and maroon library in a velvet smoking jacket, listening to some Baroque music right before a decadent dinner. I want more.

Pours out a nice coppery color with a small head. aroma is very sweet and fruity. Flavor was similar with a hint of the alcohol. The alochol was well hidden. for a 14% beer, it was very difficult to detect.

Another tasty bw at the carolina gathering. I think this one came from Tom’s beer fridge too but i am not positive. I remember this being farily sweet and powerul and not much else. Thats all I remember, I mean. But I do know I enjoyed it and hope it shows up at my doorstep someday!

07/09/08. - - Courtesy of tpd975. Pours amber with tan head. The aroma is big and inviting with caramel and rich dark fruity esters of grapes, plums and sweet berries before it heats up a bit. The taste is rich and yummy but does have some alcohol welling up. I get creamy caramel candy and some nutty roasty malts. Then the big dark fruitiness comes in and rides into the finish along with a warming alcohol sensation. Leaves a sweet lip smacking feeling behind.

Sampled at the O-Town throwdown. This beer has a nearly opaque copper color with thin tan head. The aroma is pretty big with lots of dark fruitiness and with hints of caramel and sweet malts. There also seems to be some whisky and alcohol in the background. The flavor is delicious barleywine dark and shriveled fruit flavors with a whisky and sweet caramel under currents. It ends sweet, syrupy and rather nice.

Bottle... O-Town Throwdown... Murky brown ale with a vinous, earthy nose. Notes of sherry, caramel, wood and ethanol. The flavor is all sticky-sweet melted caramel and port wine. Full-bodied with mild carbonation. Caramel, cotton candy, warming finish. Kudos to boboski for sharing this one!

From a 22 oz. bomber bottle with a bottling date of November 2005, sampled at cellar temperature in a snifter. Poured a caramel barley wine brown with a small foamy light tan head that settled into a fine lacing, very minimal amount of sticking. Aromas of brown bready caramel, fruity esters, figs, raisins and berries, oaky vanilla that meshes with spicy alcohol, molasses and hints of pine. Good, moderate carbonation and a dry, crisp, alcoholic slick, velvety sipping medium-full bodied mouthfeel. Tastes of grain breads, toffee and caramel malts that combines with the molasses flavor, fruity, plums, figs and sour berries, woody alcohol that is very warming in the back of palate, earthy, pine herbal leafy hops emerge in the end, a soft, smooth bitterness, and a dry yeasty, malty finish. Definitely a sipper, a very nice English-style barley wine with a few American characteristics, one of the better ones I’ve tasted, a must try for any barley wine fan.
