Commercial Description:
Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. Though the recipe and process for Arctic Devil have evolved over the years, it is typically brewed in January then aged in oak barrels for several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In its youth, Arctic Devil gnarls and snarls its way across the palate. Containing this beast of a beer for long periods in oak barrels--some having previously aged port, wine or whiskey--tames the unleashed malt and fierce hop flavors, melding and mellowing this powerful liquid into an incredible elixir worthy of a brewer's table. Each annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers' resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Distinct nuance and complexity are contributed by the wood's previous tenants, resulting in unique flavor profiles in each batch that continue to change over time. We invite you to savor Arctic Devil Barley Wine upon its release then cellar some for future enjoyment.

Finally. 22oz bomber via trade with NYBeer, just got a vintage bottle of this, not sure of the vintage of this but I’m guessing its oldish as the trade happened in October. Shared with bikesandbeer and my girlfriend and others. Pours a dark dark brown with a tan head that started about 1 finger and faded to a partial ring. Nose is really really really heavenly. Its damn noserific, yes that makes no sense, but ok. Taste is big, very warm taste with lots of up front caramel. The flavors are various including a bit of vanilla, some dried fruits, and clearly lots of caramel. Alcohol is present, but in a barleywine I’m not really upset, it feels nice on the throat its a wonderfully yummy sipper. So yes I like this beer I’m so happy to finally drink it, now I need to get my hands on a bottle of M.

Bottle from weeheavysd. Dude you kick ass!!! Rich amber pour. And hell if you really want to read a great review read the one before me. This was a remarkably great beer and Flaco covered it all...but I will give it a higher rating. Cheers!!

Shared after the Big Worse and Fred from the Wood so may have been an unfair comparison. Smokey alcohol aroma. Big alcohol flavour. Really strong molasses and soy notes.

Bottle thanks to kyzr, 2005 bottling. Great, English style barely wine. Pours with a light brown head covering a muddy brown (red-tinged) body. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, plums, cohocolate, vanilla, and dark pitted fruits. Taste is boozy, with caramel, some nuts, brandy, dark fruits and a bit of cotton candy. Heavy, very creamy with light carbonation. Great northwest beer, thanks Mitch!

Bottle. 2009. Amber-mahogony beer with a dark cream colored head. Whiskey and rich malt aroma. Rich malt and whiskey flavor with light fruit and light smokiness. Fuller bodied. Rich malt and whiskey lingers with light cocoa and light smoke.

This is an impressive beer. Aroma of English hops, and a barleywine in the English style. lightly sweet, with plums and other fruits. Very low carbonation, nearly still. It is rare to find a barlleywine like this. A good surprise.

Bottle pours dark brown, burnt caramel hues, small sandy colored fizzy head, with very spotty lacing.   Seems quite aged by its somewhat stillness.   Fantastic aroma of dark pitted fruit and loads of brown sugar/carmelized sugar.   Smells fantastic, albeit fairly sweet.   Little whafts of alcohol are also present.   Smoothness on first sip, lots of brown sugar and fig/date/raisin as well.   Very minor alcohol, otherwise its hidden quite well.   Slight warming in the throat/chest however.   Body and mouthfeel are bordering on full, but seem rather mediocre given the heartiness of this brew.   Big, HUGE, malty finish, sweet, with loads of brown sugar and dark pitted fruit.   Almost a bit too sweet tho... slightly cloying.   Otherwise, a fine aged Barley Wine.   Big shout out to TChrome for sending this beer as a freak’n freebie!!!!   I owe you Tad!!!

In short: A big sweet decadent American barley wine with a nutty and woody twist. Almost excellent.
How: Bottle 22oz. Aged unknown but consumed only a few months after I received it from MrChopin. Thanks a lot Kevin
The look: Almost clear very dark ruby body topped by a small beige head
In long: Interesting nose of rich sweet caramel, woody hops and alcohol. This beer smells “big”. Taste is heavy crunchy caramel, dry toasted malts, brown sugar, brownies, graham cookies, dried dark fruits, almonds, wood barrel, some porto. Alcohol is a bit apparent. Somewhat reminiscent of Angel’s Share (the not-problematic 2006 batch). I’m usually no big fan of boozy unbalanced mega-sweet beer but this one has a lot of complexity. Aging potential here. I don’t know if my bottle was fresh or aged, hard to tell with such a strong sweet beer. The bottle only has the bottling day and month but not the year. The beer wants to know when its birthday is but not how old it is. Clearly this beer is a woman.
