Commercial Description:
Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. Though the recipe and process for Arctic Devil have evolved over the years, it is typically brewed in January then aged in oak barrels for several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In its youth, Arctic Devil gnarls and snarls its way across the palate. Containing this beast of a beer for long periods in oak barrels--some having previously aged port, wine or whiskey--tames the unleashed malt and fierce hop flavors, melding and mellowing this powerful liquid into an incredible elixir worthy of a brewer's table. Each annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers' resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Distinct nuance and complexity are contributed by the wood's previous tenants, resulting in unique flavor profiles in each batch that continue to change over time. We invite you to savor Arctic Devil Barley Wine upon its release then cellar some for future enjoyment.

22. Pours deep ebony with caramel highlights. Slim creamy rim of tan. Big toffee and roast nose. Plenty of caramel and butterscotch there as well. Beautiful medium creamy body with very soft carb. Sweet candy bar notes on the mid-palate: caramel, butterscotch, toffee, and then a wee bit of roast grain as well. An unfortunately sharp booze bite joins the party near the finish. Not quite rubbing alcohol in its intensity, but enough to keep this from a somewhat higher score. Bound to be lovely and soft in a year or two.

07/09/08. - - Courtesy of tpd975. Pours amber with tan head. The aroma is big and inviting with caramel and rich dark fruity esters of grapes, plums and sweet berries before it heats up a bit. The taste is rich and yummy but does have some alcohol welling up. I get creamy caramel candy and some nutty roasty malts. Then the big dark fruitiness comes in and rides into the finish along with a warming alcohol sensation. Leaves a sweet lip smacking feeling behind.

Sampled at the O-Town throwdown. This beer has a nearly opaque copper color with thin tan head. The aroma is pretty big with lots of dark fruitiness and with hints of caramel and sweet malts. There also seems to be some whisky and alcohol in the background. The flavor is delicious barleywine dark and shriveled fruit flavors with a whisky and sweet caramel under currents. It ends sweet, syrupy and rather nice.

Very sweet barleywine, a bit cloying and in serious need of more aging. Very sweet caramel flavor up front, the hops just exhausted from even thinking about where to begin. A bit hot on the palate, some excess alcohol comes through. Good but needs to age a bit to let the malts and alcohol settle more.

Dark brown. Creamy, very rich and weighty mouthfeel. Big notes of brown sugar exude throughout. Other notes of tobacco, caramel, freshly toasted bread, wood and nuts. Warm, hidden alcohol. Grassy, piney hops balance things out wonderfully. Delicious barleywine.

22oz. Bottle (10% ABV): Aroma of malts, caramel, brown sugar, dark ripe fruits, raisins, light tobacco, oak, and a hint of alcohol. Poured brown/ruby/amber in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, light brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of medium and large-sized particles throughout. Highly complex flavor is heavily sweet. Tastes of malts, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, tobacco, dark ripe fruits, oak, light vanilla, slight alcohol, and a hint of cinnamon. Medium to full body. Viscous, coating, texture. Average carbonation. Sweet, malt, brown sugar, oak, tobacco, dark ripe fruit, and light alcohol finish. A very nice barley wine. 10%ABV is noticeable but well hidden.

Gorgeous deep red/garnet color. Oily, syrupy. Rich caramel and bountiful malts. Lots of sweetness, vivid alcohol, and layers of fruit. Very fine. Gosh, and a great label too.

Amazing appearance, and a monster aroma. Super sweer, like drinking fresh maple syrup. Nutty and syrupy, with maple and honey, sweet dark molasses abd rich brown sugar. Absolutely the most amazing finish I have ever had in a barleywine.
