Bountiful coffee nose. Woody bitterness makes this an awesome drinker. BrewDad (2366), Olympia, Washington, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 31, 2007 On draft in Seward. Black with tan head, aroma I would expect given the name, and flavors that balanced quite well. Pretty moderate on the coffee and chocolate, sweet and smooth. puzzl (2619), New York, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 29, 2005 A very nice porter. Pour is pretty deep black with a decent head. Aroma is coffee, hazelnut, a bit of warm malt. Flavor is overwhelmingly coffee but very nice, refreshing, smooth. I’m glad I get to be the one to push this fine to beer to 10 ratings. wavers1 (129), novato, California, USA

Also, definitely has lots of coffee flavoring, and perhaps some chocolate, but mostly coffee. If you like coffee and dark beers, this may be the beer you give a 5. shadey (1496), Rochester, New York, USA

The aroma is rich chocolate and coffee. Not that pleasent of a mix. I’ve definitely tasted better blends of these two flavors. The tastes are actually much better. The twang goes away in the taste. It gets better the more I drink. It is appropriately lighter than a stout and easy to drink. scraff (1942), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Nose was definitely espresso-like, but more complex notes of chocolate, nuts, and vanilla shine through as it warmed. Flavor up front was wet coffee grounds, a bit more chocolate, nuts and vanilla, but in comes a light hop bitterness late to keep it decently balanced. Medium bodied and smooth, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Good complex brew that would make for a decent session event. Thanks again to Gary at MS for sending this brew my way...
