BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Jun 4, 2008 I did not realize the cult following behind this beer.It was kind of like dark lord day, only on a much smaller scale (anchorage after all). A small batch was released and came and went. I was lucky enough to get a glass of this. Good lord this is dark, black as night in the glass. Butterscotch, vanilla, oak and alcohol in the nose. I would love to come back and try this with some age on it, it is really kind of dumb, still has some "bottle-shock." Takes a while for this to really open up and show its potential. Lots of dark fruit flavors, chocolate covered cherries, and boozy oak notes throughout. I think this could use some longer bottle aging and more time in cask, but still very good. railcat1 (578), Orlando, Florida, USA May 15, 2008 22OZ bottle i found while cleaning out my cellar and this was not a bad IPS with hints of chocolate and a sweet and thick pour black as night it had hints of oaak in it,there is alot of things going on in this beer and as it warmed the abv was more present and more flavors came out.cheers! blutt59 (2042), Dallas, Texas, USA May 3, 2008 bottle, black in color with an asphalt nose and motor oil and prune flavors, very different travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Apr 23, 2008 Black in color with a good tan head. Strong alcohol in the smell also raisans, roastiness, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is raisans, dark malts, roasty, and chocolate. jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Apr 14, 2008 The night capper in 4/12 DDD with J in c-bad. Another epic night of beer, eh? 2007 vintage - another big thanks to Tim for the goods. I really hope all my senses were in check for this...
Nose was fairly straightforward - oak, dark chocolate, with a roasty dry blanket - barrel seems missing for the most part. Flavor goes crazy on the roastiness - so roasty it turns towards a bit salty - weird, I know - but not unpleasant. Licorice sweetness and faint bourbon oak float around in a backdrop of coffee grind. Bittering, long, and dry finish. While I was a tad disappointed - following BA Speedway can be a tough act to follow - and in lieu of that this did an ample job. Very curious as to how the other vintages drink b/c I hear they vary greatly! ISO! hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Apr 13, 2008 Another oak-aged brew shared by jarspag during a DM tasting on April 12. Thanks narfy. Thick and viscous oily pour. Silky appearance with a pillowy light brown head that settles. Big roasted malt character in the aroma with a slight funk, and notes of raisin and pear, smoke, and caramel. Faint hints of bourbon wood in the flavor, but pretty weak overall. A bit of salty roastiness and burnt coffee with sweet pine needles. Seems like it could use longer aging in the barrel. Thick, cheek-biting coating on the palate. Soft texture with a lightly breadish aftertaste. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Apr 12, 2008 (22oz. bottle, 2007 vintage) Pours a oily opaque black body with a spare brown head. Aroma of chocolate, black licorice, roasted malt, vanilla, and a touch of lactose. Flavor of strong roasted malt, chocolate, toasted grain, and some dark fruits with a dry finish. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Mar 18, 2008 Tasted at Ezra’s imperial stout tasting. We all laughed about the song "Berserker" from the movie Clerks. Deep, dark and boozy as hell! Oak whisky came through nicely. Very nice! Unique and distinct palate with enticing esters. Well crafted to say the least.
