pantanap (659), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 3, 2008 22oz bottle. big thanks to my alaskan buddy Tim for sending this one multiple times (i won’t get into the details)....deep dark, almost black pour with a thin light brown head that gravitated to the sides of the glass...aroma was certainly nice with a focus on bitter chocolate, an adequate roast component, and some wood and bourbon....roasted malt, chocolate cocoa, hints of toffee that become dominated by smoke and ash. adequate carbonation and decent mouthfeel. masonjer (388), Lansing, Michigan, USA Jul 1, 2008 Shared by Pantanap at Kanarama. He tried bringing things off my wants list and noticed this wasn’t on there. I agreed, this definitely should have been. Thanks kan, sounds like it was a lot of work to finally taste this. Poured pitch black. Aroma is some bourbon and roasty notes. Flavor is roasty as well, nutty, some nice balanceing hop character, smoky, vanilla and chocolate. I liked the fact that the bourbon didn’t dominate, still retained a nice bitterness throughout. Last one of the night, so I have a feeling that my taste buds did not do this justice. Nonetheless, a great beer. Thanks so much Kan. kmweaver (1770), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jun 16, 2008 22oz bottle, courtesy of jjpm74. Thanks, John! Pours a very dark, chocolate-brown color; light tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Generous amounts of chocolate and nougat in the aroma; cocoa, intricate chocolate notes, and chewy nougat / sweetness. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: intense, chewy chocolate (milk, cocoa), bitter chocolate, nougat, and caramel; solid amounts of toasty oak and soft vanilla; intricate, soft vanilla-infused chocolate, coffee, and intricate yeastiness / breadiness. Lenghty finish: milk chocolate, cocoa, and toasty vanilla and nougat notes; reasonably dry / toasty end. BlackDonald (610), On a beer trip all over the USA, California, USA Jun 4, 2008 I did not realize the cult following behind this beer.It was kind of like dark lord day, only on a much smaller scale (anchorage after all). A small batch was released and came and went. I was lucky enough to get a glass of this. Good lord this is dark, black as night in the glass. Butterscotch, vanilla, oak and alcohol in the nose. I would love to come back and try this with some age on it, it is really kind of dumb, still has some "bottle-shock." Takes a while for this to really open up and show its potential. Lots of dark fruit flavors, chocolate covered cherries, and boozy oak notes throughout. I think this could use some longer bottle aging and more time in cask, but still very good. railcat1 (468), Hammond, Indiana, USA May 15, 2008 22OZ bottle i found while cleaning out my cellar and this was not a bad IPS with hints of chocolate and a sweet and thick pour black as night it had hints of oaak in it,there is alot of things going on in this beer and as it warmed the abv was more present and more flavors came out.cheers!
