SpringsLicker (2041), Tennessee, USA Jul 10, 2006 I just got this from Liquid Solutions with my FFTW order. Dec 2003 bottle!
I will re-rate when I get a fresh one.
Huge creamy tan head over a deep amber body.
Malty rich aroma with the vestiges of a big piney presence. Now, this is very much like a Big Hoppy Monster, dark and malty with lots of hops that serve in a supporting, not dominant role. Still lots of hops, but the malt is coming through from the aging.
Sweet, with a touch of spice. No longer hop heavy as it might have once been.
Full and smooth bodied. presario (2955), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jun 30, 2006 rich dark copper with a one inch head. Very rich hop aroma with pine scents and sugars from the malt. Dark malt flavour with dry hops and grapefruit. Roasted almost burnt sugar cookies and citrus hops. Noticeable alcohol. Almost a smoked IPA. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Jun 28, 2006 22 oz bottle - if the markings on it were right, this was a 2003. Pours out dark red in color, smell is malty, and smells like hop oil. Taste is grassy, sharp, and dry. Its not bad, my taste for the double IPAs is slowly fading, I still like them alot, but the over the top bitterness is getting to me. Double IPAs used to be refreshing, and I still find some that are, but it seems that the growing trend is to just make them taste like you are eating a hop rather than balancing it out to get something that actually tastes good yet has a high bitterness too. Thaichile (599), 10aFly, New Jersey, USA Jun 26, 2006 Bottle. 22oz. Pours a deep golden amber with a nice off-white head hat sitting on top. Hops and malts battle it out, but the hops win. The malts could have used some additional reinforcements to help stave off the hop attack. Still in all, this was a very nice 2IPA. Viscous, with light caramel sweetness. Thanks to wohlfs for the bottle. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Jun 20, 2006 Pours a clear amber syrup with some tiny floaters and a solid, creamy tan head. Hoppy, sweet malt aroma with pine and a hint of sweaty sock. Not as sweet in flavor as the aroma would suggest. Caramel malt and hops dominate with pine, citrus and some vegetative notes. A little oxidized. SoLan (1369), Orlando, Florida, USA May 22, 2006 Dark amber/brown with a small, frothy, tan head. Aroma of pungent, venomous hop resin, cannabis, pine, and grapefruit rind. Flavor adds a strong toasty caramel malt base and a subtle, but sharp, herbal/vegetal aftertaste. Medium/full body, smooth. Excellent. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA May 9, 2006 From a 22oz. brown bomber bottle with a notched bottled date, Dec/third week.
Made a good appearance, poured a chill hazy reddish bronze with a fluffy pale tannish head that settled into a thin foamy lacing, good carbonation.
Had a caramel malty and piney, citric hoppy nose, grapefruit rind and dry hops.
A crisp, hop textured and smooth lightish medium bodied mouth feel, good drinkability.
Piney, citric and leafy dry hop taste, a smooth rolling bitterness in the palate, a balancing caramel maltiness, a sweet sugariness from the malts and a dry, caramel and hoppy finish with a lingering dry hoppiness in the palate. The alcohol warmth is very subtle through out the taste.
I, personally, enjoyed this D/IPA from Midnight Sun, I found it tasty and balanced, well worth trying.
JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA May 3, 2006 Thanks to LP for this one, This has been on my wish list for some time. Amber to copper color with a moderate off-white head. Earthy malt and citric hops mix well in the nasal passages with a touch of fresh bread and light herb. Flavors of eating a biscuit while on the shores of a remote lake and having a drink of grapefruit juice. Earthy as in the nose. Linger of strong green hops. A nice, more traditional, IPA.
