marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Jan 24, 2009 Malty and fermented honey aroma with an unusual meaty accent. Thick and rich head. Dark brown color which was strange for an IPA. Some what meaty (beef stock) type flavor with malt and hops, fairly sweet, but good. Creamy palate with a sweetly oriented duration. Very Good. Ughsmash (3981), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jan 23, 2009 Bomber. Poured healthy medium amber with a short-lived, but easily-resuscitated cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up pineapple and floral hoppage over a sweeter, lightly toasty caramel base.. just a touch of candy-like sweets around.. good stuff! The flavor was quite similar with caramel and a bit of pale malts at the core, surrounded by floral, pine, and citrusy bitterness.. the hops were dry and seemed to be slightly aged.. finished warm with some residual bitterness and slight citrus sourness. Medium-plus bodied and engaging on the palate, but the flow was only so-so.. tasty and enjoyable overall. ndubs360 (114), portland, Oregon, USA Jan 21, 2009 picked this one up from whole foods the other day. pours a deep green/amber color. notes of pine and hops. nice crisp finish. i was really suprised by this one. yumm BeerNeedy (60), Anchorage, Alaska, USA Jan 4, 2009 22 oz bottle. Darker than most doubles with a delightful off white dense and creamy head. Initial aroma is that of juniper berries. This IPA was smooth and flavorful and not as strident with the IBUs as some others. High drinkability and another winter favorite goes into the rotation. BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 Bottle purchased from bottletrek.com, contents poured into a Stone OG tulip glass.
Appearance is a clear amber/dark brown hue, thick craggy foam mostly sustains, latticework lacing on the glass.
Smell is moderate hops, ranging from pine, floral, citrus, grass, and dirt/earth, some sweet caramel malts in the background.
Taste is also full of hops, pine and floral tones mostly dominate here, hints of sour grapefruit, sweet caramel malts, honey, and cotton candy arrive midway, finishes dry and bitter.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick texture with resin that coats the mouth, lively and adequate carbonation.
Drinkability is high given the style and abv, the alcohol is well-masked, the aromas are unique and give off a xmas tree essence, and the dry hops are a fun ride. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 15, 2008 In short: A highly drinkable refreshing IPA with focus on juicy fruits flavours. Excellent.
How: Bottle 22oz. Sample at Cathschlag birthday party tasting.
The look: Clear copper-ruby body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose of pine-needles and tropical fruits. Body if soft and velvety for the style, a little yeasty, moderately sweet, a whole lot of juicy tropical fruits, some pine-cone juice. The juicy fruity flavours are so dominant that they totally overwhelmed the malt caramel. Round and smooth with a juicy bitterness. This is drinkability over intensity. Wow, that’s a kick-ass IPA, with Midnight Sun Alaska could become the new California, and with the climate changes who knows…
AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Aug 6, 2008 Beautiful garnet color with a frothy khaki head, nice lacing. Medium strong pine sap, citrusy hop aroma. Creamy smooth mouthfeel. Great flavors of sweet caramel and brown sugar blending perfectly with bitter grapefruit and pine hop flavors that sting your tongue. Reminds me of Nugget Nectar, heavy on the sweet stuff with a strong hop profile. Great beer. MatSciGuy (629), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Jun 16, 2008 [Bottle] shared by Skyview. Burnt caramel pour with a moderate tan head. Aroma is pine resin, citric hops, and a pretty good malt backbone. Flavor matches aroma. One of the better balanced DIPA’s I’ve had.
