When the loveable "hopheads" at Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse requested a winter version of alehouse favorite Sockeye Red IPA, our brewers instinctively spawned CoHoHo Imperial IPA.

CoHoHo begins with generous measures of pale two-row and specialty malts along with spirit-boosters like brown sugar and honey. Hefty doses of Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe hops beautifully balance that outrageous malt bill while juniper berries heighten the festive character of this exuberant beer.

Bottled. Deep amber colour, mediumized slightly off-white foamy head. Aroma is fruity, caramelly with some floral, nectary and mild ripe fruity notes. Flavour is big time hops, caramel, toffee and a quite big bitterness o it. Still nicely balanced and very refreshing to drink.

Clear dark brown beer. Short lived frothy white head. Fresh pineapple hop nose. Semi soft and semi dry palate. Fresh sweetish hops - pineapple and a little peach. Sweetness from the brown sugar and some fruitiness which must come from the juniper I guess. Finishes fresh and with a few minerals. Lovely sweet IPA.

A: The pour is a dark amber color with a moderate amount of off-white head. This is the sort of appearance I generally fear when it comes to an IPA. S: There is a definite herbal note right away from the juniper berries. Some grassy and floral hop notes that a lot of the hoppy beers from Midnight Sun have. Mildly sweet, mainly of caramel and molasses. T: The sweetness is mild to moderate and takes the form of toffee and molasses. Very grassy and herbal hoppiness with a touch of pine. The juniper stands out quite strongly, here. M: The body is medium with a fairly high carbonation and a bitter, dry finish. D: I had my doubts about this one, and they were confirmed. Let’s keep the juniper berries in the gin and out of the beer. That’s not to say this was bad, just wasn’t what I look for in an IPA.

I can see the headline now: Busy beer label causes seizures in beer geek., and don’t get me started on the tacky salmon reference...damn someone though that was clever.

Oh, you want me to talk about the beer? Sorry. The colour is golden-amber...an attractive golden-amber. Don’t know the intangible that makes it better all the other "golden-amber" beers out there but it is to my eyes a pretty beer. The aroma is spicy, minty and toasty. Overall the character is moderate for style, with the expected citrus and toast notes, but not particularly chewy. Nothing awesome, but quite enjoyable.
