kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 16, 2006 22 oz bottle, via BA timmec64. Pours a clear black with mahogany edges under a two finger foamy light brown head that left nice lacing. Aroma is slightly sweet with light roasted and burnt malts. Notes of lactose, chocolate, and light coffee. Flavor is lactose sweetness and roasted malt up front fading to a burnt malt finish with some bitterness from the burnt malt. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with an oily texture and active fizzy carbonation. A very good Stout. Lots of lactose flavor and not thin in any aspect. Worth seeking out. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 23, 2005 What a beautiful beer. Jet black with a dark tan head: a fine-looking stout. Drank warmer than desired, but dertainly not disappointing. Heavy, yet smooth. This breweries best beer that I’ve had so far. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Aug 11, 2005 Thick and nearly solid black with a thin tan head. Mild herbal aroma with some fig, toasted cake and licorice. Almost smells like a Fig Newton. Relatively thin in body. Chalky and a bit metallic with a muddy flat finish. Some coffee and bitterness also. Really not that great and surprising coming from a family of better beers. kjharley (8), anchorage, Alaska, USA does not count Aug 11, 2005 Dark smooth beer, a little light in the aroma department but very easy to drink for a stout. One of my favorites to have on hand. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Aug 1, 2005 22-oz. bottle from March 2002. Pours black with brown hints at the edges and a huge foamy tan head, fizzy. Dark roasted coffee and chocolate malt with musty oak notes and yeast (horse blanket). Dark roasted bitter coffee and chocolate flavor with a light acidic malty oak finish. Dark bodied and spicy full palate. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Jul 24, 2005 Rather dissappointing stout. Pour was perfect, deep black with a very dark head, but little after that. Aroma was lacking pretty much all along, just a touch of coffee and not much else. Palate was far too watery overall, leaving little to the taste but some roast malts, a touch of hops. After seeing the strength of some of MS’s bigger beers, this one is surprisingly weak. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 17, 2005 Draft sample at the brewery 7/8/05: Interestingly brown head on this one. Little aroma, but a great little bitter edge ... grassy, almost grapey. Nice. aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA Jun 26, 2005 Black with wood stain brown around the edges. The head starts off a tan cream foam and gradually faded over the two hours to nothing, but spent most of those two hours completely covering the beer. The aroma is malty, chocolate, toffe and soy sauce. The flavor is much the same. Not overly sweet. It actually comes across much like an imperial stout, but lighter in flavor.
