BeerVirgin72 (568), C-Bus, Ohio, USA Jun 30, 2008 Bottle shared at Cbus tasting 11. Smell was very hoppy. Taste was a bit piney and hoppy...Not a huge fan of the flavor. And it all was a bit chaotic.
Rogueone (365), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA Jul 28, 2008 Bottle shared at Columbus tasting- Pours a ruby-brown with a thin, white head. Aroma is very buttery hoppy, with some toasted caramel malt. Flavor is pine. Just pine. I was expecting a little more from the aroma, but was a little let down. Finished surprisingly bitter. gator2683 (71), Anchorage, Alaska, USA Jul 27, 2008 dark clear reddish brown with foamy head. intense hoppy aroma, with a strong bitter taste SuzyGreenberg (900), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 10, 2008 22 oz. bottle - the planet series opener pours a clear, dark amber with huge off-white head that takes a bit to settle; lots of lacing left behind; sweet pine hops with lots of sugar and dry malt; very deep and intoxicating aromas; very malty and hops a small contribution, except for in the bitter finish; flavors never live up to the aromas on this one goldtwins (3721), Nesconset, New York, USA Jul 2, 2008 Poured a hazed amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was of toffee smelling malt and notes pine and citrus hops. The flavor had a citrus start and maty middle. Pine was tasted from middle to the long bitter dry finish. TAR (1998), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Jul 1, 2008 Burnished auburn. Ornate light-beige froth is thick and pasty. Rich bread crust, caramel, and plummy malt aromas harmonize with tangy mango, red licorice, and plasticlike phenols. Mild whiff of anise and creamed coffee. Hard, vivacious carbonation. Bottle conditioned. Body is densely concentrated with mango and resinous hops, and quite tacky as a result of the high resinous content. Peppery hops prick the palate as the bitterness gradually intensifies. Prominent alcohol bolsters the dryness and lifts some of the oily hop residue from the palate. Though the hop flavors match the intensity of the bitterness, the bitterness is fairly brash and rigid with aspirin and grapefruit rind rather than clean and precise. Dab of melon lends softness, though the body is slightly chalky (Amarillo?) and becoming increasingly clingy. Thickset malts are showcased in abundance, but are not adeptly extracted and, consequently, compound the weighty body rather than absorbing some of the weight. Lightly kilned malts tease the palate with a distant but well-defined sharpness. Quickly palate fatiguing as the flavor profile teeters on the edge of medicinal after only a few gulps due to the soppy residual sweetness and fiercely peppery alcohol. Meaty yeast notes also add to the astringency. Salted grapefruit rind continues to sting the palate and suppress the underlying hop-derived subtleties at the finish. Quite the jumbled arrangement. While the aroma is somewhat attractive as it sports some malt nuance and well-cloaked alcohol, the flavor is a huge letdown. Uninspiring.
