egajdzis (3021), Terrapin, Pennsylvania, USA May 2, 2008 Poured a hazy red color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, citrus fruits, floral hops, pine, and Belgian yeast. Taste of citrus, tobacco, pine, tropical fruits, resiny hops, some alcohol, and a moderate bitterness in the finish.
JMFG (1173), Florida, USA Sep 26, 2008 Courtesy Beerlando. Mostly clear copper color with a moderately thick light tan head. Sweet citric aroma, toasty malts, and light Belgian yeast aroma in the background. Hoppy taste - definitely more of a hoppy red on the taste - citric start, nice malt base, lingering hops. Nice. Beerlando (1352), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 10, 2008 The body is clear and dark ruby red in color. A large, well retained, spongy, cream colored head leaves thick, solid rings of lacing all the way down the glass. The aroma shows big notes of grapefruit, floral, and piney hops atop a toasty, bready, caramel malt base. A dry, yeasty note is distinctly Belgian in design. Flavors are reminiscent of a piney, Lagunitas hop bomb. Bold pine resin and citrus hops provide ample bitterness, overpowering the sweet caramel malts. The finish turns grassy and the yeast dries things out. Medium-full bodied with balanced carbonation. A solid brew, for sure, and a nice Belgian twist on the Imperial Red. TheCheeseMan (513), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA Sep 7, 2008 Courtesy Beerland. Pours a rich and warm copper-red, thin head. Aroma is hugely resinous, with little if any malt coming through. The flavor is terribly unbalanced for me, with nothing but hop bitterness. Fair. puzzl (1821), New York, New York, USA Aug 29, 2008 Bottle shared by Warren at their little tasting thing. Belgian Style? What? Not even close. These presents zero Belgian character. Instead it is a pretty typical Imperial Red hop-bomb, loaded up with Amarillo and all that goodness. Kind of dull though, with too big of a body. BrotherGrendel (186), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 On draft at O’Brien’s for the CBC/WBC.
Appearance is a murky amber hue, minimal head and lacing [Gabe Fletcher was at the pub, said there were some issues with the carbonation].
Smell is wow, Belgian candy and yeast, dark fruits, grassy hops, caramel malts, alcohol and light fruits (peaches, pears).
Taste is initially dominated by pine/grass hops and big caramel malts, as well as dark rich fruits, transitions to sweet candy and peach syrup, finishes dry and sweet.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick and oily texture, mild carbonation (likely due to carbonation problems).
Drinkability is high, a complex and unique blend of Belgian and IPA and Amber styles, the sweet fruits and candy balance out formidable hops with a strong caramel malt backbone.
