Chaotic yet hypnotic, Mayhem is a deliberate Double IPA, brewed and conditioned with a special Belgian yeast that contributes complexity and spice. Abundant American hops offer grapefruit, pine, must and mint, which play off the fullness and sweetness of pale malts then provide a biting yet enticing finish.

Mayhem Double IPA accents the complex spice combinations found in Thai, Indian, Cajun, Morrocan, Mexican and Southwest American cuisines as well as BBQ marinades, dry rubs and sauces.

Mayhem creates Mayhem.

Hazy yellow-orange beer with an active white head. Grass and herb dimensions to the hop aroma profile. Lightly floral, cannabis. Flavors are malty and sweet with a pretty immediate hop presence and an initially bitter but overall rather clean, dry finish.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Myrup. Pours a cloudy yellow with an off-white lacing head. Citrusy and yeasty nose. Medium body, fruity and citrusy with a very dry and astringent finish. Quite some yeast in the finish. 130211

22 oz. bottle, pours slightly hazy golden with a medium white head. Aroma is huge on Belgian spices, orange rind and citrusy hops - wonderful mix. Flavour begins with orange rind, coriander and other spices, yeast, and finishes with spicy hops, and a sort of minty finish. Unique and most excellent.

12/10/10 notes: Bottle in SF. Pours a murky brown color with a small head. Aroma has candied orange, ripe fruit and sweet malt. Flavor suggests hay, overripe orange, and vaguely metallic phenols. Odd. Judging from previous reviews, there must be some serious batch discrepancy, or at the very least an inability for this beer to age.

Poured a slightly dark gold, with plenty of white, foamy, lacy head that retained just fine. Smell was a coriander bomb to start, followed by grapefruit and orange citrus, that belgian yeast in the background, and then an intoxicating scent of raw mint leaves for a brief moment. Taste followed suit, with tons of the citrus/coriander before a hoppy rind bitterness came out. Pine and mint finished the beer out. Malt in this one is not too strong - it’s mainly the hops/yeast that come out - offering only a short period of sweetness, and it works very, very well. The mouthfeel was fantastic, as the carbonation was stronger than average, and really brought out the flavor of coriander. Drinkability is really high due to the dry mint finish, and the 8.2% abv is nowhere to be felt. Reminded me a lot of La Fin Du Monde by Unibroue, and gave it a run for its money in my eyes (I know they are listed as different styles, but they were very similar, regardless of classification).

651mL from Healthy Spirits in San Fran. Pours a clear, deeper yellow with a massive, sheen, yellow, rocky head. Great retention. Pretty intense carbonation. Amazing retention. Nose of sticky, sweet citrus fruits, sweet orange, Belgian yeast peppery yeast, a little earthy that reminds me of light Brett but I’m not totally convinced. Taste is heavy metallic, lots of puppy breath, dry newspaper. One of the most metallic beers I’ve ever had. Hard to enjoy. Body is pretty soft. Meh.
