COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is our perennial summer seasonal beer, first brewed in Summer 1995 when we opened. Affectionately called "Spunky and Chunky", Old Whiskers Hefeweizen is a traditional Bavarian-style unfiltered wheat beer. Created with equal parts malted wheat and pale two-row malt, Old Whiskers is lightly hopped to style. A unique Bavarian strain of yeast imparts a clove- or banana-like aroma and flavor. (We swear we did not put cloves into the brew. It is the magical powers of The Yeast.) It’s the perfect summer quencher served with or without a slice of lemon.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2005 (22 oz bottle: $3 at Midnight Sun Brewing Co. in Anchorage, AK) I can tell just by the aromatics from simply pouring the beer that this isn’t your garden variety hefeweizen. The strong presence of spices immediately becomes apparent with the first sniff of this highly aromatic beer. Yes, there’s clove, but also some other spices I can’t identify, and it’s making me hungy. Also a bit of stinky feet and a modest tartness. Spices once again aren’t shy in the flavor -- ginger, lemon peel, and coriander are jumping out -- with a very light wheat maltiness as a base, and a moderate citrusy tartness in the finish. I think there’s a touch of orange citrus, or maybe that’s orange peel, but I’m definitely picking up hints of it here and there. But I’m getting no banana in this beer at all unless maybe if I close my eyes and imagine really hard. Nope, that’s not even working. Light bodied, perfectly carbonated, and very clean, tingly and refreshing on the palate. The disappointing color is pale straw, and the beer is more hazy than actually cloudy, but given how light the malt component is, I guess the pale color isn’t surprising. A small, white head settles to a ring, but leaves plenty of patchy lacing on the glass. If it’s supposed to be a German Hefeweizen, I’d like some banana esters in the beer, but as it is, it comes across as a very spicy cross between and American and Belgian Wheat to me. But it’s still a very tasty and refreshing brew, and because of the clean, spicy flavor, I can keep drinking this beer without palate fatigue, so it truly seems perfect for a hot summer Alaskan day (and yes, they do have them).

Bottle:   Dirty golden, pale haze, moderate white head, frothy, fairly decent lacing.   Faint banana, clove, and bubblegum.   Not too shabby in the nose department.   Better than most American examples.   A little more mealy than wheaty on the tongue, but does retain some clove and banana.   Not too heavy, a little lighter.   At least not as filling or heavy as many German examples.   Seems fairly clean, exit is balance between wheatiness and a mealy sort of flavor.   Some dirty ice water like flavors linger tho after the finish.   You know, kinda like sucking on an icicle thats hanging off the roof, yeah that.   Its actually better than I expected though.

Golden color beer with a huge pillowy off white head. Light floral nose with some spice. Flavors of the traditional banana, clove and bitter orange peel flavors. It is an okay hefe.

Bomber. Poured a light yellow, slightly cloudy with a full thick white head. Peppery aroma. I can’t discern any banana or clove notes. Taste is straight up malt/wheat and pepperiness. Prickly mouthfeel with a crisp finish. Chucks of yeast. Decent.

Super hazy golden coloured body with orange highlights and a thick tan head - looks nice! Aroma of coriander seed, curacao, wheat, cardboard and a bit of sugars. Light-bodied; Sharp pungent wheatie flavour with some yeast, curacao, malt, sugar and citrus flavours coming through. Aftertaste is very mild, with only wheat tastes noticeable and a hint of citrus sugars. Overall, a decent beer, and a decent hef, but nothing special and really nothing to buy - especially when there are so many other better options from the brewery! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased on 23-June-2010 from Brown Jug in Anchorage, Alaska sampled in Seward, Alaska on 27-June-2010.

22 oz. bottle shared by shigadeyo. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small white head. The nose is crisp, fruity, grassy, yeasty with a small amount of clove. The flavor has a fresh fruity lemon zest upon a toasted bready malt base. The finish is dry with mild spices. Medium bodied and average at best.
