Woodsmoke aroma blends with rich dark malts and a bit of dark fruit/fig sweetness on the nose and palate. Odd mix that, but it works. Rich almost to the point pf cloying but not quite, and the smoke cuts the roast and sweetness nicely. Drinks like an imperial stout.

Thanks to Craft Shack for this bottle. Pitch black the colour is, 2 finger head of tan, lacing...fine it tis. Deeply malty, a mix of caramel and milk chocolate. Smoke? Sure is light in the nose. Wow. The 2 malty tastes I get in the smell are greeted by a healthy smokey flavour that blends SO well with the malt both sweet and roasted. Some of that chocolate must be dark as I get some bitter notes in the finish and the long lasting aftertaste. Medium body, ditto for the co2. This is delicious. I see it is 56 IBUs, that explains the bitterness. The 8.4% abv is hidden rather well.

Coffee, coca smell, beautiful dark, brown head color. The taste is that bitter coffee kick, good sweetness, it’s almost a milk stout without the creamy milk flow. I like this beer. The closet to a milk stout without being one .

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is opaque black (flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, nuts), with notes of sawdust, smoke/ash, tar, rubber, alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Surprisingly disappointing, as this is typically a pretty solid brewery. Overly phenolic nose and rather harsh and burning in the mouth...seems 10% or over.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dense viscous black color with a small brown head that slowly recedes to nothing. The aroma is big and bold with smoke, anise, chocolate, cocoa brownies and ashy burnt grains. The taste is bitter hops forward with a big bite of earthy bitter walnuts, this is followed up by smoked grains, anise, burnt toast, cocoa and chocolate syrup. The palate is full and viscous with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry with lingering roasted bitter walnuts. Overall: Top shelf stuff.

22 oz bottle from City Beer San Francisco shared with drsordr. Pours dark brown to black in color with a medium sized dense khaki colored head. The aroma and flavor have meaty smoked malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, some coffee notes, some molasses and char bitterness to the finish. I loved Barfly and this is pretty darn good itself.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06 pours opaque black with tan head. Nose light peaty smoke, ham, roast, and sweet malt. Taste bitter roast up front, dark chocolate, lighter smoke. Moderate bitterness through mid palate. Lingering high palate bitter finish. Lighter mouth feel.

Nitro at the brewery. Nearly pitch black with a large lasting tan head. Huge aroma of smoky roasty chocolatey awesomeness with molasses. Big intense flavor. Smoky as hell with thick molasses, anise, and semisweet chocolate. This is second runnings? Dag dogg. Oh yeah, Bar Fly (1st runnings) is AWESOME!!! Thick and nitrogenous, smooth as your mother. HELL YEAH ALASKA BABY! Woo, rare ticks!

Draft sampler pour at Face to Face Beerfest ( f2f.org ): Wins for great name, as well as best second runnings beer...Stands on its own as a tasty dark ale showcasing smoked and dark malts. Smoke lingers, as does dark chocolate...slightly fruity though clean and medium-bodied (not oily or syrupy).
