Commercial Description:
Brewed in the bold spirit of Alaska, Sockeye Red IPA is a finely crafted Pacific Northwest-style India Pale Ale with a real bite. Ample pale two-row malt creates a fresh, firm body while specialty malts impart a spawning red hue. The predominant character of this fiesty catch comes from outlandish portions of Centennial, Cascade and Simcoe hops, giving this beer tremendous citrus and floral aroma and flavor. Determined and bitter but amazingly balanced, Sockeye Red is gnarly enough to take you hook, line and sinker. Forget about a bigger rig; grab a bigger glass.

22 oz bottle. A bit dissipointed in the color, pours a dark copper. I was expecting some red, but there was none. Even went as far to ask my wife what color she thought it was and she gave me a look like "who the hell cares?". Anyway, she agreed. However, huge citrus hop aroma. Bold caramel and roasted malt, floral and citrus flavors, mainly grapefruit. Nice oily medium mouthfeel with a dry hop bite finish. I did taste some metallic notes in the finish, but it seemed to dissappear after a while. Midnight Sun is becoming one of my favorite US breweries.

On tap at Humpy’s in Anchorage and billed their their "Sockeye Red". Pours a translucent ruby amber with a medium bubbly off white lacing head. Aroma had lots of fresh hop pellets, grapefruit and some caramel malt and nuts. Flavor was a lot of hop bitterness, pine, mixed citrus and grapefruit along with hints of caramel malt. Bitterness was on the extreme side. Dig it.

Bottle at tasting. Deep copper red in color with a little off white head. Fruity citrusy roasty aroma. Caramel roasty notes. Malty and hoppy flavor. Citrusy, grassy notes. Dry tasting. Finish is bitter. Crisp and refreshing. Nice beer.

Aroma of citrus and floral hop. Coppery amber color with a ferocious beige head. Flavor of ripe stone fruit, a little citrus, and some slightly roasted malt. Medium bodied, and decent carbonation without a bite. Must be unpasteurized at least. Later sips are sweet fruit and bitter hop. The finish is fairly dry, and it is extremely tasty. Something of a rye note in the end.

Bottle, scored in Haines AK thanks to Nixter. Yes, a bit darker than an IPA "should" be, I’m happy they included Red in the name to indicate that. Complex, hop flavors with a little less pine-y resin than I would have thought with all of that Simcoe. Lots of nice dank, pungent hop aroma - (Columbus/Summit?). Only 5.7% alcohol? Tasted certainly bigger than that. Reminded me of a cross between Racer 5 and Red Rocket, but with a much hoppier, drier finish. Great beer.

Pours with a deep amber body topped by a thick lasting head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly bitty and hoppy with a slight floral note, a little pine and a hint of grapefruit. The nose is very floral. Medium bodied, tingly and dry.

22oz bottled Oct. of 2006. pours hazy reddish brown with big white head. aroma is hoppy but balanced, orange, grapefruit, and grassy hops with toasted biscuit and caramel. flavor is pretty bitter and at this point a grassy hop juice flavor. caramel, nuts, and biscuit are malt flavors. just a decent ipa.
